This position is accountable for providing service line leadership, strategic planning, development, and administration oversight for the operations of Surgical Services (Same Day Surgery, PACU, Anesthesia, Eye Surgery Center). This will include development of strategies for utilization of resources in clinical and support areas to insure the delivery of the highest quality of patient care to the satisfaction of patients, associates, medical staff and management, in the most effective and economical manner.
Major Responsibilities:
Achieve site and system goals for Clinical Outcomes in all areas of responsibility.
Improve department and organization's outcomes by providing leadership to performance improvement activities: a) Support process improvement activities, b) Facilitate development, maintenance and annual revision of PI plans for all areas of responsibility, c) Review and provide feedback for PI projects, d) Analyze results and develop strategies to ensure that desired clinical outcomes and standards of care are achieved and sustained, e) Provide leadership to hospital and system committees, task forces, and PI teams, f) Mentor division leadership to ensure adherence to principles of shared governance and compliance with IDPH, DNV, and other licensing/accrediting agencies.
Ensure quality and safety of care delivery by: a) ensuring the development of competency training programs as needed; b) compliance with Culture of Safety initiatives; c) promoting evidence based practice through a variety of initiatives, staying abreast of newly published studies and ensuring application of research results in practice; d) Developing, approving and facilitating review of department policies, procedures and protocols, e) Interpreting hospital policies and procedures to staff and ensuring that staff follows same.
Communicate extensively with reporting staff and staff from other departments to receive, respond and communicate information quickly and effectively. Devise and oversee methods for corrective action regarding identified deficiencies.
Keep abreast of current clinical and managerial practices through attendance at workshops, seminars and professional organization activities to maintain own professional growth and development.
Serve as administrative representative to department meetings for Surgical Services, System Wide Forums and Councils, Quality Council and Shared Governance Councils, as assigned.
Ensure overall excellence of Surgical Services program by: a) Developing and implementing annual goals for Surgical Services, b) Directing the overall performance of the Surgical Services program, c) Working with Medical Directors, Anesthesia and other physicians, and key personnel to address issues affecting Surgical Services.
Evaluate and advocate for staffing and other clinical resources necessary to provide excellent health outcome results.
Partner with Medical directors for Surgical Services and Anesthesia Services to identify goals, plan process improvement and implement evidence based practice.
Assures AORN Standards are met within operating rooms and assures ASPAN Standards are met with operating rooms.
Assures ASPAN Standards are met within the post anesthesia care units.

Meet strategic objectives for growth for all areas of responsibility.
Work with the marketing team and service line directors to identify new technology, equipment that has the potential to: a) Improve quality patient care. b) Increase market share. c) businesses growth. d) Public education and outreach plan for Surgical Services that includes community partners.
Monitor impact of services on all other hospital services. Notify other areas impacted by new and/or expanded services in order that planning for those services can be accomplished.
Work with service line directors to initiate the planning needed to develop and implement new programs. Develop and implement annual plans for assigned departments including short and long range business strategic objectives. Ensure the continued ability of the departments to meet present and future demands of both internal and external customers and achieve growth targets predicted by others by: a) Researching, planning, and adopting new emerging technologies, programs and services. b) Projecting long term needs for departments with regard to staffing, equipment, financial and physical needs
Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external clients/contacts to promote and ensure program growth.
Negotiate, administer and provide oversight for contracts with internal and external entities, including compliance with business conduct, legal, supply chain, financial and regulatory requirements (e.g. vendors, medical directors, professional staff, etc.).
Partner with Medical Directors for Surgical and Anesthesia Services to develop mutually beneficial programs and services.
Funding our Future
Ensure financial targets for all areas of responsibility are met.
Develop, implement and monitor the operating budgets for areas of responsibility, including revenue, expenses, salary planning and capital equipment sufficient to meet current and projected patient volume/service requirements.
Monitor departments' productivity levels and work functions to ensure proper staff and resource utilization. Identify areas for operations efficiency improvement and implement changes.
Examine monthly financial, operational and budget variance reports, analyzing activities and performance budget targets. Develop strategies/action plans to ensure that department, division, and hospital financial outcomes are achieved.
Ensure appropriate use of IS Systems so that patient charge information is captured in a timely fashion.
Exercise financial control via approval and processing of purchase requisitions, accounts payable vouchers, local travel and petty cash requests in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Initiate cost containment activities judiciously to address financial performance while balancing outcomes in other areas of responsibility.
Ensure annual updates to charge master and reports in coordination with hospital and system wide product line requirements to ensure maximum capture of revenues and cost data.
Develop financial knowledge and accountability in division leadership. Communicate financial performance to associates.
Licensure:
Nurse, Registered (RN)
Education/Experience Required:
Masters Degree required
Bachelors Degree Required (Either the Bachelors or Masters Degree must be in Nursing)
7yrs health care operational management experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
Excellent management skills including ability to work well with others, team building skills, communication and presentation skills.
Ability to succeed in a changing environment and handle multiple responsibilities
Strong knowledge of Operations. Strong drive to achieve superior results. Current RN license in the State of Illinois.
