UTILITY LOCATE TECHNICIAN
Job Description: The Utility Locate Technician, also known as a Miss Dig Locator, is responsible for identifying, locating, and marking underground utilities (such as gas, electric, water, telecommunications, and sewer lines) to prevent damage during construction or excavation projects. This position requires the use of specialized equipment and adherence to safety protocols, ensuring all underground utilities are accurately marked before any digging occurs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Read and interpret utility maps and work orders to identify underground utility locations.
- Use electronic locating equipment to detect the presence of underground utilities.
- Mark the locations of utilities with spray paint, flags, or other materials, as required.
- Ensure markings are clear, accurate, and in accordance with industry standards.
Compliance with Safety Regulations:
- Adhere to local, state, and federal regulations, including Miss Dig (or other state-specific one-call systems).
- Follow company and regulatory safety standards to prevent accidental damage to underground utilities.
- Report unsafe conditions, damages, or utility discrepancies immediately.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Complete required documentation, including sketches, photos, and location data, for each job.
- Enter and maintain accurate records in the company’s system, documenting the work completed.
- Communicate with contractors, supervisors, and other stakeholders to resolve issues related to utility locations.
Customer Service & Communication:
- Communicate professionally with contractors, customers, and the general public about utility marking and safety.
- Answer questions about the utility locating process and Miss Dig service.
- Address customer concerns and escalate issues when necessary.
Maintenance of Equipment:
- Maintain and operate all tools and equipment used for locating underground utilities, ensuring they are in proper working condition.
- Report any malfunctioning or damaged equipment for repair or replacement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience:
- Prior experience as a utility locator or in a related field (construction, telecommunications, gas/water/electric companies) is preferred but not required.
- Training or certification in utility locating (i.e., NULCA) is a plus.
Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, and work orders.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues.
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and communication.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Good hand-eye coordination and vision to perform marking tasks accurately.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Certification in utility locating (if required by the state).
Work Conditions:
- Work may be conducted in various outdoor environments, including urban, suburban, and rural locations.
- Possible exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and construction equipment.
- Occasional travel between job sites using a company vehicle.
- May involve after-hours and on-call work depending on project timelines.
