The Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2) is proficient in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. This position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record. Reason for visit Tangent screen visual fields Chief complaint Basic ocular motility History of present illness Pupillary evaluation Basic review of systems Ocular surface assessment Review systemic and ocular medications Eye drop administration Record allergies Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care Pharmacy information Pachymetry Family, social, medical, and ocular history Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses Visual acuity at distance and near Color vision test Lensometry Stereopsis test Manual refraction Sensorimotor exam Confrontational fields Automated & manual perimetry Humphrey visual fields Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields Amsler Grid visual fields Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care. Provides patient-centric care. Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training. Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality. Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control. Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned. Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness. Meets daily productivity goals. Maintains JCAHPO certifications. Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order. Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications. Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities. Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary. Works evenings and weekends as needed. Performs organizational duties as assigned. Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients. Facilitates motility exams. Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams. Performs imaging including but not limited to fundus photos, OCTs, and Slit Lamp exams. Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff. Acts as a super-user for technology implementations, optimizations, and training initiatives. Acts as preceptor and trainer for team members. Serves as a lead technician providing oversight to clinical teams when assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education: High School diploma or equivalent Required Certification and Licensing: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) Experience: 2 years of relevant experience Knowledge, Skill, and Attitudes: Works well with patients of all age groups. Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge. Works independently and in a collaborative environment. Displays intermediate knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility. Exhibits ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using EMR telehealth platform. Demonstrates competency in all ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups. Prepares patients for intravitreal injections. Ability to function as an ophthalmic scribe. Proficient in Microsoft Office. DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS Clinical: Educate patient on refractive procedures Collaborates on refractive clinical flow with administrative team and providers Preforms all refractive evaluations including: Documenting patients’ medical history Test patients’ visual acuity Depth perception Color perception Conduct a Retinoscopy Refraction, manifest and cycloplegic Perform tonometry and slit lamp assessments Measures intraocular pressure of eyes Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment Performs other tests and measurements as requested by physician i.e., PAM, Topography Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate or medicate eyes Surgical: Educate patients on pre- and post-operative instructions Conduct pre and post op vitals Preform specialized imaging tests for patients Prep patients for surgery while Order and maintain clinical supplies Assist in all laser procedures, elective and medically necessary Activation and deactivation of all Lasers on J&J and Alcon platforms Identify proper key cards to be used with different procedures and documents use Identify and solve any problems by troubleshooting all laser equipment Perform fluency test and calibration assessment daily to assure surgical parameters and proper laser function Conduct sterilization of laser room, equipment and instruments Input all patient data into laser system and ensure proper Monitor gas supply and change tanks when necessary Order and Maintain OR supplies and medications Document procedures in logbook Preps surgical charts and nomographs for Providers Education: High School diploma or equivalent Certification and Licensing: Johnson & Johnson or Alcon Certified: Laser, Imagining, Scrub training Laser safety training Experience: 2 years of relevant experience Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of medical terminology Knowledge of eye anatomy and physiology Knowledge of eye disease and systemic diseases that affect the eye Knowledge of ophthalmic equipment, proper care and usage Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written Knowledge of computers and excellent typing skills The University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.
