Job Description:
- The Cardiac Sonographer is a registered cardiac ultrasound sonographer with demonstrated clinical expertise.
- The Sonographer is responsible and accountable for the delivery of all cardiology service modalities according to the Cardiovascular Medicine clinic.
- The Sonographer works collaboratively with the healthcare providers ensuring that high-quality, cost-effective care is provided to all patients under this service by acting as a clinical resource, monitoring standards of practice and patient outcomes; patient satisfaction; and adherence to departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Provides direct patient care relative to the department organizational policies and procedures, which may include but are not limited to: ECG, echocardiograms, stress echoes, ECG stress test, monitoring, vascular studies, etc.
- Documents data in the electronic record base (ex: CPACS, Cerner). Instructs and assists the patient in preparation for testing and/or procedures according to the needs of the patient population.
- Always maintains patient privacy.
- Continually monitors and observes the patient during testing and/or procedure and notifies the physician immediately if needed.
- Recognizes dysrhythmias and echo pathologies.
- Prepares reports for physicians.
- Ability to apply and discontinue Holter monitor and upload data.
- Maintains equipment as required and according to manufacturer guidelines.
- Reports equipment failure according to department policy, tagging equipment, notifying BioMed and department director and/or designee.
- Inspects and cleans equipment prior to each patient use.
- Utilizes the electronic health record for message taking, input of data for patient visit, etc.
- Maintains current knowledge and skill related to various ultrasound testing, procedures, etc.
- Develops Health Education material for various testing and procedures specific to ultrasound, stress test, echoes, etc. Coordinates scheduling of diagnostics studies.
- Communicates with the treating physician to request specific health information and/or to provide an update of a patient’s health care status.
- Documents data in the electronic health record and follows Infection Control guidelines and standards.
- Utilizes informed consent as needed for treatments and/or procedures and utilizes the paper chart during down time procedures.
- Current certification as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) required.
- Cardiology experience in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
- Current AHA or equivalent BLS certification required.
- Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills in ultrasound and cardiology. Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in the following age groups: Young Adult, Adult and Geriatric. Knowledge of Cerner desirable. Knowledge of an electronic health record required.
