TITLE: Hearing-Impaired Interpreter
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma. Minimum of Level 3 on the Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) or a passing score on a state-level interpreting evaluation. No prior experience is required.
REPORTS TO: Principal and Assigned Teacher(s)
JOB GOAL: To act as the facilitator of effective communication between the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students, the educational staff, and hearing peers in the educational environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interprets what teachers and others say, on a level that is understood by the student.
Confers with the teacher regarding the communication needs of the student.
Prepares for interpreting assignments by studying content areas, lesson plans, outlines, vocabulary lists, etc.
Assists with collection and correlation of data used in IEP assessment.
Tutors students according to directions given by the teacher.
Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships between hearing-impaired students, school personnel, and other students.
Attends IEP meetings as a member of the educational team to provide input for educational goal assessment (not as an interpreter for meetings).
Attends workshops and in-services for skill development.
Notifies the lead interpreter when the student is not present.
Serves as a team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer-driven, and valuing diversity.
Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community leaders.
Must have finger dexterity and be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) when requested, for purposes of driving a school bus.
