Job Title: School Librarian

Term: 184 day school year

Salary Range: Unit A Salary Scales
Job Goal: The School Librarian fosters a love of learning that encourages student curiosity, engagement, and growth in a welcoming learning environment. The School Librarian provides learning experiences that encourage students to become effective consumers and creators of ideas and information, and which are guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, AASL Standards and district standards.
Education: Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in School Librarianship
Professional Certification: MA DESE license as a School Librarian; SEI Endorsement, SPED Endorsement
- Additional teaching certification in technology, general education, special education, and/or ESL highly desirable
Specialized Knowledge: School Librarian professional practice: library collection development and maintenance, digital library systems, information systems and databases, child development, curriculum frameworks, growth mindset, inclusive practices, cultural proficiency, anti-bias instruction, co-teaching
CORI and Fingerprinting: All appointments are conditional based on satisfactory CORI and SAFIS background checks per 603 CMR 51.00
Preferred Experience:
- Experience teaching English Language Learners in a diverse public school setting
- Experience with students with special needs, including students with emotional, behavioral, and/or learning challenges
- Strong background and experience in literacy and library sciences
- Familiarity with the Destiny library system
- Strong background and experience in curating literature collections for the age group
- Highly Desirable to have experience in:

Reading Advocacy
- Provides learning experiences across all subject areas as guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, AASL Standards, district standards and requirements
- Reinforces strategy-based reading instruction to help students make meaning from text and supports students’ interactions with a variety of genre as reflected in district curriculum guides
- Promotes students and staff reading for information and pleasure
- Supports teacher and school reading incentive programs
Information Access and Delivery
- Provides learning opportunities for students to access and utilize multiple databases available to them through the school and through the MA Board of Library Commissioners
- Provides group and individual instruction for students and staff on developing inquiry questions, and in the use of print and electronic reference tools, searching techniques, and information literacy practices
- Assists students in locating reference and other instructional materials, and in developing knowledge, skill and abilities to gain independence and fully utilize the library materials and resources.
- Assists teachers and students in the literacy skills of using information resources and incorporating information skills into classroom curriculum
- Provides information and instruction in areas of information literacy, the research process, ethics, intellectual property and copyright, and the use of educational technologies
- Creates and maintains a library media website, keeping information current and relevant to students and staff
Instruction
- Collaborates with teachers to design, teach, facilitate, and evaluate learning experiences that incorporate inquiry learning, information and digital-media literacies, critical thinking, and self-assessment
- Evaluates, innovates, and refines instructional practice and assessment strategies to increase student learning, engagement, and confidence in learning
- Monitors students' understanding of the curriculum effectively and adjusts instruction, materials or assessments when appropriate
Program Administration/Management
- Maintains circulation systems for library and curriculum related materials
- Monitors internet sites for curriculum relevance
- Adheres to policies and procedures for school libraries while staying current on changing state and national standards
- Arranges book displays, exhibits and other items to provide an appropriate learning resource environment and maximize students' interest in reading and learning
Leadership/Collaboration
- Models instructional strategies and coaches colleagues in the integration of information literacy strategies and technology with curriculum
- Communicates clearly with colleagues to share new ideas, technologies, and resources
- Collaborates with parent groups to host Book Fairs and other library special events
- Maintains strong ties with public library system
- Any other relative duties as assigned by the Principal
Supervisory Responsibilities
Direct any paraeducators who may be assigned to the library, and train and supervise student assistants and parent/community volunteers
