POSITION TITLE: Direct Support Professional
POSITION STATUS: Non-Exempt
PAY STRUCTURE Salary Range ($16.00-$17.50 hour) *based on experience and education.

The Direct Support Professional (I) will work with each client, assessing their needs and meet those needs with the goal of fostering a positive, encouraging environment. This position is in a Day Service setting in which, the individuals we serve, will be given opportunities to volunteer, learn job ready skills, participate in group activities, join social clubs, as well as engage in community involvement. The ideal candidate will be willing to provide guidance, direction, encouragement, be patient, be a team player, as well as be hands-on to ensure that each individual reaches his/her full potential.
General Summary:
- Ensuring all clients are treated with respect and dignity, recognizing individual needs and encouraging independence
- Provide supervision and guidance for clients during skill building activities
- Develop and implement individual treatment plans for clients
- Assist with and work to strengthen the individuals’ many daily living needs including but not limited to: nutrition, hygiene, exercise, communication and socialization skills
- Develop a rapport with clients and cultivate a safe and supportive relationship
- Update client case notes daily
- Always ensure an appropriate staff-to-client ratio
- Assist all participants in being actively involved in the daily activities to achieve greater independence using person-centered planning and self-determination.
- Supervise lunch period.
- Oversee arrivals and departures of participants.
- Participates in staff training and attends staff meetings.
- Always maintain the safety and security of the clients through line of sight supervision
- Responsible in observing your client’s negative behavior, the duration, the intensity, and the damage, factors that may alleviate or aggravate the behavior.
- Ensures the safe loading/unloading and timely delivery of clients to their outings/appointments in compliance with all traffic laws, safety guidelines, current federal, state and local standards and regulations, as well as our established policies and procedures
- Drives Company and/or personal vehicle in a safe and courteous manner.
- Ensures all seat belts are fastened prior to moving vehicle.
- Utilized Route Software and plans most efficient and effective route prior to transportation of clients to and from destination.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Education:
- High school diploma/GED required
- Minimum age of 19 years
- Valid Driver’s License
- Current vehicle Insurance upon request
Requirements:
- The following certifications are required -will provide train if necessary:
- CPR/1st Aid
- Medication Aide
- Safe Crisis Management
- Must be able to pass the following background checks:
- Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Child & Adult Protective Services Central
- Criminal background check
- National Sex Offender Registry
SPECIAL SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
- Three years’ experience working with people with intellectual or other developmental disabilities preferred
- Management of stressful situations responsibly and effectively provides input and assistance in planning and evaluating programs and clients’ goals.
- Maintenance and documentation of records of client’s accidents/incidents as required.
- Assistance of clients in being actively involved in the daily activities to achieve greater independence using person-centered planning and self-determination- ADL’s- activities of daily living.
- Strong interpersonal skills and passionate about helping those in need.
- Relate positive image to clients, their families, support people and the community.
- Employee must be able to read and write proficiently.
- Employee must be able to successfully complete all required training in the required time
- Ability to be flexible in a changing environment
- Utilize verbal de-escalation skills during crisis intervention
- Utilize approved behavior management techniques including use of de-escalation room and passive physical restraint when de-escalation and/or physical intervention is necessary for crisis management
- Employee must be physically capable of transferring, assisting with transfers, assisting with lifting clients who require physical assistance
- May be exposed to infectious/communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens and/or distraught individuals
- Employee must be able to reach and bend as they assist clients with physical activities
- Frequently required to stand and walk
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects
