Safety Officer and Training Coordinator

The Safety Officer and Training Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety and training programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. This role includes evaluating safety hazards, coordinating safety training, and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.

This position requires a minimum of five (5) years of experience in applying safety standards, regulations and procedures as it relates to manuals, audits, reports, checklists, etc. for a general contractor, subcontractor, or related engineering or environmental health and safety consulting firm. Experience with hazardous material remediation and asbestos abatement preferred. 

The Safety Officer and Training Coordinator should have experience working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, USACE EM385-1-1 Safety & Health Standards, and other federal, state, local or special customer regulations that govern safety requirements.

The qualified candidate should have safety-training credentials for OSHA 500 (preferred), OSHA 30, and must have Competent Person Training (CPT) in fall protection, confined space, scaffolding and excavation. Additionally, the candidate should hold a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar certification. 

Responsibilities

Safety Management:

• Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies and procedures.
• Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards.
• Inspect safety gear to ensure all items are in working order.
• Ensure all job sites have necessary safety gear.
• Investigate accidents and incidents, and prepare reports with recommendations for improvements.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards.

Training Coordination:

• Conduct safety orientation for new employees.
• Design, develop, and deliver safety training programs for employees.
• Schedule and coordinate training sessions, workshops, and drills.
• Monitor and evaluate training effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
• Maintain accurate records of employee training and certifications.

Compliance and Documentation:

• Work closely with management to identify safety needs and promote a culture of safety.
• Provide guidance and support to employees regarding safety concerns and procedures.
• Serve as a liaison between the organization and regulatory agencies.
• Work with management to submit required safety documentation and certifications for bids and proposals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Certification as a Safety Professional (e.g., CSP, CIH) is preferred.
• Proven experience in safety management and training coordination.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and other safety standards. OSHA 30, OSHA 500 (preferred), and CSP certification or similar. 
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
• Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus.

Additional Information:

• This position will require occasional travel to various job sites.
• Flexibility in working hours may be necessary to accommodate training schedules and emergency situations.
