Position Summary:
Obtains venous and capillary blood specimens from patients. Instructs outpatients in the proper collection of urine and fecal specimens.
Position Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED or HiSet with passing grades)
Skills:
- Previous phlebotomy experience preferred but not essential
- On the job training usually requires approximately one month to be capable of normal productivity levels.
- Must demonstrate good patient manner and possess the ability to offer effective communication with patients.
Essential Functions
1. Obtains venous and capillary blood specimens from patients.
2. Responds to emergency phlebotomy requests.
3. Demonstrates proficiency of venipuncture techniques relative to the unique characteristics of the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations served.
4. Makes rounds to the nursing units to collect specimens or deliver laboratory reports.
5. Assess the patient for risk or potential of neglect or abuse. Makes referrals as appropriate.
6. Maintains inventory and restocks outpatient phlebotomy area as needed.
7. Adheres to procedures designed to prevent and control the spread of communicable disease paying particular attentions to standard and isolation precautions at all times.
8. Understands and complies with facility and departmental regulations regarding the handling and disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
9. Uses equipment according to guidelines.
10. Is proficient in the utilization of the general laboratory applications of the laboratory information system.
