50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now, a nonprofit organization that works at the local level to advocate for a high-quality education for all kids, regardless of their address. About the Opportunity
The Director of Finance will be a key partner responsible for driving the overall financial planning and analysis (FP&A) efforts within the organization and operating in all areas relating to i.) budgeting and forecasting activities across our C3, C4, and Political Action Committee (PAC) entities, ii.) financial reporting and accounting (including account reconciliations and year-end audit preparation), and iii.) cash management & treasury activities, and d) the support of 50CAN’s fiscal sponsor program.
This position will regularly collaborate with leadership across the network to identify, institute and track relevant financial metrics and analyze and report on key initiatives. The Director of Finance will also recommend and draft key financial policies that drive the sustainability and financial health of the organization. The Director of Finance will oversee all financial grant-related activities and ensure smooth financial operations in collaboration with a high-performing team of the Finance team. This role regularly engages with senior-level staff, state campaign executive directors, fiscal sponsee teams, and all 50CAN staff.
The Finance Director will report to 50CAN’s Vice President of Finance and Operations.

The Director of Finance primary responsibilities and duties will be:
Financial Strategy and Fiscal Responsibilities
In partnership with the VP of Finance and Operations, set the vision and strategy for finance at 50CAN, including:
- Lead and manage the annual budget planning process , including the RFP and vetting process, monitior progress and changes
- Own and manage financial processes including comparing budget to actuals and making suggestions accordingly to maintain financial sustainability
- Develop financial metrics, cash flow forecasts, long-term financial planning, and reports informed by rigorous analysis, risk assessments, and what-if scenario modeling
- Prepare monthly financial reports to present to internal teams including leadership, state campaigns, and fiscal sponsees in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials
- Collaborate with leadership and other departments to ensure financial alignment and support organizational goals
- Support annual audit and tax filing processes to timely completion
- Provide financial training for all new fiscal sponsees and continuing training opportunities
Finance Operations Management
- Oversee the organization’s banking activities and investments
- Support Vice President of Finance and Operations with compliance of contracts and agreements
- Update and implement all necessary business policies and practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
Grant Reporting and Development
- Ensure compliance with fiscal and programmatic reporting requirements
- Create all financial materials, including budgets, for new and renewed grants as well as for periodic reports on behalf of state campaigns and fiscal sponsors
- Work with the Development team and programmatic departments to ensure that fiscal requirements for grants and contracts are identified, realized and monitored
- Track restricted grants, including allocating expenses and recognizing revenue
- Monitor revenues against budget to ensure all fiscal sponsors run in the black
The ideal candidate will have formal experience with a client services organization, management consulting or former nonprofit organization organized as a spoke-and-hub model. In addition, the successful candidate will have:

- Experience leading and managing financial operation activities, preferably in a growing and dynamic nonprofit organization
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to translate an organizational strategy into a financial model and approach
- Dexterity with a variety of financial software applications, ideally including Quickbooks Online, Concur, Ramp and Bill
- Excellent communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with other departments
Educational background and work experience:
- Minimum 3 years experience in a senior management role in finance, ideally in a nonprofit environment; at least 5 years work experience total with budgets of a minimum of $10M.
- Experience either as an employee or board member of a nonprofit organization; familiar with nonprofit finance and GAAP accounting regulations
- Proven track record of success in facilitating progressive organizational change and development
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Strong manager of people and systems who has managed direct reports
- Ability to provide high-level modeling and strategy while also being responsible for implementation of processes
- Proven ability to be responsive and manage projects to on-time completion
- High level organizational skills and collaboration; abilityt to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated experience with finance systems, budgets, financial management, and audit oversight
- Demonstrated expertise using Excel
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with multiple and varied assignments
- Undergraduate degree, preferably in finance or accounting
The following training/skill set is ideal but not required:
- Familiarity with the challenges facing education reform efforts in the United States

This position is fully remote and operates on the East Coast time zone. Salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience.
