POSITION OVERVIEW


The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is a key member of the senior leadership team at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, working closely with the executive leadership team and reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer.As a strategic partner in advancing the museum’s mission of remembrance, memorialization, and education, the CIO will play a vital role in leading the museum’s digital transformation. This position ensures that technology aligns with the museum’s mission, enhances the visitor experience, and supports long-term growth, operational efficiency, and innovation. The CIO fosters a culture of collaboration and partnership, ensuring technology solutions support the museum's mission while strengthening relationships across all levels of the organization.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Core Technology & Operations Management

  • Oversee core technology systems, including enterprise applications (e.g., Gateway ticketing, Salesforce CRM, and Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT), software development, digital platforms, and IT infrastructure, ensuring they support museum operations efficiently and reliably.
  • Ensure the reliability, scalability, and security of technology systems, including CRM, ticketing, collections management, and web platforms, while identifying operational improvements to address evolving needs.
  • Lead cross-departmental technology initiatives to improve integration and ensure seamless technology adoption across teams.
  • Develop and manage the IT budget, ensuring operational spending aligns with organizational priorities and financial constraints.

Strategic Technology Leadership & Digital Transformation

  • Develop and execute a long-term technology strategy that enhances visitor engagement, operational efficiency, and sustainability while aligning with the museum’s mission and optimizing resources.
  • Partner with senior leadership to prioritize and align technology investments with organizational goals, ensuring innovation supports—and does not overshadow—the museum’s mission.
  • Drive innovation through digital engagements, interactive exhibits, and visitor-facing technologies that deepen audience connections with the museum’s content and stories.
  • Champion the adoption of new tools, such as Salesforce and AI technologies, to improve CRM capabilities, stakeholder marketing, and operational efficiency, ensuring their legal and ethical use aligns with organizational values.
  • Lead change management efforts to foster adaptability and ensure smooth transitions during technology-driven transformations.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies to identify opportunities for future innovation and organizational improvement.

Digital Experience & Product Development

  • Guide the development of interactive museum exhibits, digital products, and online experiences that reflect the museum’s mission and storytelling goals.
  • Collaborate with curators, educators, and content creators to design technology experiences that amplify the museum’s educational and cultural impact.
  • Lead the adoption of next-generation digital tools, guiding business units in exploring technologies that enhance visitor experiences while aligning with organizational goals and readiness.

Initiate Data-Driven Decision-Making & Analytics

  • Champion the initiation and enhancement of data management, reporting, and analytics capabilities across the organization.
  • Collaborate with museum leadership to begin developing data-driven insights that inform operations, fundraising, and visitor engagement strategies.

IT Governance & Compliance

  • Establish and maintain technology governance frameworks, ensuring systems adhere to compliance standards while supporting operational flexibility.
  • Oversee information security, data privacy, and technology-related risk management, ensuring protection against evolving digital threats.

Leadership & Organizational Development

  • Foster strong, trust-based relationships with museum leadership, staff, external vendors, and partners to ensure alignment between technology initiatives and organizational goals.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing technology team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop partnerships with external vendors and consultants to enhance in-house capabilities and accelerate project delivery.
  • Act as a visible leader within the museum and the broader cultural technology community, representing the organization at industry events, conferences, and forums.



QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIREMENT


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive IT leadership experience, including 10 years managing IT operations, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.

Strategic Leadership:

  • Demonstrated ability to align technology strategy with organizational mission and goals, focusing on enhancing visitor engagement, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability.


Enterprise Systems Management:

  • Extensive experience overseeing and optimizing enterprise systems such as ticketing (Gateway), fundraising and CRM (Salesforce), ERP (Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT), HCM (UltiPro and Kronos), budgeting (Vena), digital asset management (Collective Access/Merlin), and content management (Drupal).
  • Proven ability to manage vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and lead system implementations.

Digital Transformation and Innovation:

Track record of orchestrating digital innovation by integrating AI, web development, and product management tools to align with organizational priorities and foster cross-functional collaboration.

Data and Analytics:

  • Strong expertise in data integration, business intelligence, and analytics, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights supporting fundraising and operational strategies.

Infrastructure and Cybersecurity:

  • Experience managing IT infrastructure, including cloud-based systems, server virtualization, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Comprehensive understanding of cybersecurity principles, IT governance, and compliance with data privacy regulations.

Leadership and Communication:

  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with experience managing cross-functional teams in a high-performance environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and drive organizational change.

Additional Skills:

Expertise in project and program management, IT service delivery (e.g., ITIL frameworks), and regulatory compliance, with familiarity in nonprofit-focused platforms and strategies. Demonstrated cultural competence and mission sensitivity, exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to balance innovation with cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency. Proven ability to innovate within resource-constrained environments, ensuring maximum impact with efficient technology investments.

REQUIRED SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZATIONAL EVENTS


  • Participate in the Annual 5K Fundraiser and 9/11 Commemoration, as assigned.
  • Assist with other special projects and events in support of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, as assigned.
