The Mechanical Engineer III role is a key contributor to the engineering team’s success. This small but effective team is focused on delivering custom automation solutions – everything from custom single-axis actuators to OEM engineered automated machines/systems for Fortune 500 clients across the US and beyond.
Under the direction of the Design Engineering Manager, you will conceptualize, design, develop and test mechatronic automation solutions, develop tooling for robot work cells, create detailed mechanical drawings and documentation, support our quality systems, and work with supply chain vendors. You will work with a team of mechanical, electrical, applications, and software engineers to help deliver solutions on time and on budget. In addition, you will support the Manufacturing Engineer Specialist and work directly with the Operations Department as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work with the sales engineers and customers to help define the problem and understand the statement of work
- Conceptualize innovative mechatronic and product design solutions that meet/exceed customer expectations
- Help prepare, or have ownership of, Statements of Work (SOW)/proposals for new business opportunities
- Applying Voice-of-Customer (VOC) principles in creating a solution with 3D concept models for sales presentations and costing
- Designing detailed 3D models of parts and complete automation subassemblies
- Learning Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) principles to achieve capability and reproducibility in the automated system output
- Applying root cause analysis principles in troubleshooting automated systems
- Applying Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) & Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) processes during the design process
- Continue applying Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles for manufacturing reliability, simplicity, and quality systems output
- Practice designing with empathy toward downstream stakeholders creating beautiful, simple, solutions that are manufacturable, logical, and maintainable
- Creating and/or checking detailed 2D drawings of parts and assemblies
- Supporting the maintenance of Bills of Materials (BOM’s) and Engineering Change of Order (ECO’s)
- Helping design and execute Proof of Concepts (POC) to determine feasibility and performance
- Working hands-on with a wide variety of technology and applications
- Collaborating in a small cross-functional team to achieve the best work product output
- Moving fluidly between the Engineered Solutions department and the Operations department as needed
- Work to tight timelines and aggressive schedules
- Reporting-out individual progress to project managers or project leads on a regular basis

- Participate in internal and customer-facing design reviews
- Support customer Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)/Site Acceptance Test (SAT) system buyoff
- Skillfully provide coaching and advice to the Manufacturing Engineer Specialist

Qualifications/Experience:
- Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent required
- 5-7 years of relevant design experience required
- Experience in machine design using DFM principles
- Training in Six Sigma process control, LEAN, TQM, and/or DFSS
- Computer literacy and Microsoft Office experience is a must
- Experience in PDM (i.e., SolidWorks PDM), ERP (i.e., Syspro, SAP), CAD software systems (i.e., SolidWorks) is a plus
- Experience with mechatronics (i.e., sensors, vision, motion control, plc, robotics) is a plus
- Experience or understanding of automation controls (i.e., electrical schematics, automation control panels) is a plus
- Understanding principles of software code (robot, vision programing) is a plus.
