The House Mentor plays a key role in fostering a safe, stable, and empowering environment for youth in the Transitional Living Program (TLP) at 91 Place. House Mentors live alongside residents, modeling healthy habits, providing life-skills training, and helping residents navigate challenges as they work toward independence.
This role is deeply rooted in 91 Place’s core values—Christian Love, Life of Opportunity, Authentic Integrity, Empathetic Accountability, and Community of Compassion—and seeks to cultivate the seven components of wellness for residents: Physical, Social, Environmental, Vocational, Financial, Mental/Emotional, and Spiritual Wellness.
House Mentors are responsible for daily house operations, enforcing community agreements, and working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including the Housing Director, case managers, therapists, and workforce development staff, to support each resident’s journey.
House Mentors do not provide medical or clinical services but instead serve as guides and mentors, ensuring that residents develop essential life skills, such as financial literacy, time management, personal care, and healthy communication.
Key ResponsibilitiesFostering a Supportive and Safe Home Environment
- Create and maintain an environment that reflects Christian Love and a Community of Compassion by building meaningful relationships with residents and reinforcing a culture of respect and belonging.
- Serve as a positive role model, supporting residents in their pursuit of Physical Wellness (nutrition, sleep, self-care) and Mental/Emotional Wellness (coping skills, emotional regulation).
- Facilitate communal meals, household routines, and weekly house meetings to promote Social Wellness and community engagement.
- Ensure Environmental Wellness by maintaining a safe, clean, and organized home and supporting residents in personal and shared space upkeep.
- Mediate conflicts and encourage Empathetic Accountability, modeling healthy communication and conflict resolution.
Teaching Life and Vocational Skills
- Develop and lead life-skills training on topics such as financial literacy, job readiness, problem-solving, and self-care to promote Vocational and Financial Wellness.
- Work alongside the Workforce Development team to connect residents to employment, education, and training opportunities that align with their interests.
- Encourage Spiritual Wellness by supporting residents in discovering their purpose, values, and long-term goals, whether through faith, community engagement, or acts of service.
Collaborating with the Housing and Support Team
- Work closely with the Housing Director to implement policies and procedures that support residents in developing independence.
- Partner with case managers, therapists, and workforce development staff to coordinate services and resources for each resident.
- Support new resident orientations and facilitate move-ins/move-outs.
- Provide ongoing observations and updates to the Housing Director to ensure residents receive the individualized support they need.
Household Operations & Crisis Response
- Ensure residents follow house agreements, curfews, and expectations while allowing space for learning and growth.
- Maintain food inventory, coordinate meal planning, and oversee cleaning schedules.
- Conduct evening security checks and report any maintenance or safety concerns.
- Serve as the first responder in emergencies, escalating issues as needed to the Housing Director.
- Organize community engagement activities, workshops, and outings that support holistic wellness and personal development.
Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; a Bachelor’s degree in human/social services or a related field is preferred.
- Two years of experience in a residential setting or youth mentorship is highly desired.
- Commitment to 91 Place’s core values and a trauma-informed approach to youth work.
- Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in life-skills coaching, community building, and restorative justice is a plus.
- Ability to set healthy boundaries while building meaningful relationships.
- Must be at least 25 years old with a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory MVR.
- Must pass a background check (criminal, DCS, and sex offender registry).
- CPR, First Aid, and Mental Health First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
