PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT - FLEET OPERATIONS DIVISION, TRANSIT DEPARTMENT
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB:
Maintains and repairs small engines, vehicles and off-road equipment; delivers fuel; transports equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by a minimum of six (6) months of
automotive or heavy equipment mechanical experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and
experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and/or Certifications Required: Requires an approved automotive Refrigerant/Recovery/Recycling
certification within 30 days of hire. Requires a valid Class “B” commercial driver license (“CDL”) with air brakes and
“P” endorsement or a Class “B” CDL with air brakes and “X” endorsement, depending on assignment, within twelve
(12) months of hire. Requires a valid driver license.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Performs maintenance and repairs on County transit and/or automotive vehicles, small engines, off road equipment,
and tools and equipment.
Reads and interprets shop manuals, diagrams and sketches.
Operates diagnostic equipment and hand-held manual, electrical and gas-powered tools and equipment (i.e.,
wrenches, meters, gauges, drills, hammers).
Maintains and ensures the safe operating condition of equipment, tools and vehicles; may perform maintenance and
repair on tools and equipment (i.e., lifts, impact wrenches, air compressors, and sand blasters).
Performs records maintenance duties (i.e., work order comments, materials and supplies utilized, labor performed,
maintenance logs, fuel logs).
Reports any detected deterioration, repair and maintenance needs to supervisor.
May assist with planning, scheduling and coordinating tasks.
May deliver fuel to equipment at various job sites.
May clean vehicles, equipment and shop.
Performs related duties as required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate specialized automotive repair and painting equipment
and tools. Must be able exert over 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of
sedentary work; must be able to perform manual tasks and walk or stand for prolonged periods of time.
Language Ability: Requires ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record and
exchange information; requires the ability to explain procedures, and to receive and follow oral and written
instructions.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts
and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical or diagrammatic
form; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, use decimals and determine
percentages, and compute ratio and proportion.
Interpersonal Temperament: Must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision. Requires the ability to
tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with co-workers. Must be able to perform and under stress when
confronted with emergencies and tight deadlines.
Pay Rate: $18.14- $20.52
