The Academy by A Bigger World

The Academy is a unique, small, creative, highly-collaborative, hands-on team that serves middle and high school students in Waukegan, IL by offering after school and summer academic support, basketball coaching, and mentoring. The population we serve is mostly living in generational scarcity, and have been deeply affected by academic disinvestment. Our goal is to support these students in leveling up, and in reaching their full potential. We are looking for our fourth full-time staff person to join this small team.

Building strong cross-cultural relationships with students is your hallmark. You enjoy a small team dynamic, with an agile, hands-on approach.

Summary Description

As a member of The Academy , the Student Success Coordinator develops and conducts learning programs throughout the entire year. Educational programming is provided in-person in Waukegan, IL. The Student Success Coordinator provides mentoring, tutoring, homework support, coaching, and virtual support to students during in-person after school programming and summer programming with the goal of preparing students for success after high school graduation. This position is based in Waukegan, IL.

Salary Range : Salary range starts at $55k

Benefits :  The Academy by A Bigger World covers the cost of 2 / 3 insurance premiums, 3% matching retirement, life insurance, cell phone reimbursement, generous PTO & holidays.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Mentorship and Engagement with Students :

  • Assist Directors in executing programs, including tutoring, college fairs and tours, and career awareness programs
  • Facilitate smooth transition for students as they progress from middle to high school and high school to college or careers
  • Inspire and guide high school students through academic and personal development
  • Work with the Directors to implement programming that meets the needs of all The Academy’s high school students
  • Create an environment that supports students and fosters agency and self-advocacy
  • Recognize student needs and seek assistance of other professional staff to support students in solving social, emotional, physical, and academic concerns

Program Support and Coordination :

  • Meet with 40 students, both in large group settings and one-on-one, on site and provide availability to meet with students and families outside the instructional day
  • Coordinate program logistics such as transportation, program space, scheduling, and food
  • Coordinate college visits, field trips, and other events to open new opportunities for students
  • Attend student events as a representative of The Academy
  • Relationship Building :

  • Treat all students, staff, and partners with dignity, respect, and fairness and promote positive relationships with school administrators and teachers
  • Build positive relationships with parents, Waukegan High School staff, and community partners to support student success
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer tutors
  • Organizational and Communication :

  • Maintain accurate records of student participation and progress
  • Assist in maintaining program resources, ensuring supplies are accounted for and well-organized
  • Assist with social media content creation, event photography, or other external communication
  • Professional Development

  • Attend trainings, seminars, or conferences that support professional development
  • Maintain networks and participate in professional organizations as relevant to your role
  • EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS :

    Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or a related field; equivalent experience will be considered
  • Experience working with high school students in mentorship, counseling, or educational roles
  • Specific Skill Sets Desired

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to multitask and manage schedules effectively
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and work in varying environmental conditions
  • Proficient in Word, Google, Office
  • Qualities (Must have)

  • Values relationships and collaboration
  • Excellent organization, time management, follow through, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize
  • Comfort working in a multicultural, diverse organization
  • Other Requirements

  • Pass a DOJ fingerprint clearance & provide a negative TB test
  • Complete and pass mandated reporter training
  • Schedule

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week, occasional evening work required.
