a.i. solutions is currently seeking an Instrument Systems Engineer to support the Ground Systems and Mission Operations-3 (GSMO-3) program at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The Instrument Systems Engineer will provide engineering support for the Roman Space Telescope (RST) Wide Field Instrument (WFI). This position will apply their engineering and scientific background to prepare the WFI instrument for launch, on-orbit calibration, and science operations.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise to the WFI instrument as it transitions from environmental testing to preparations for launch and operations.
  • Produce instrument operations procedures for post-launch checkouts, calibration, nominal operations, and anomaly recovery.
  • Support pre-launch testing to include the validation of requirements and operations concepts, and document test results as artifacts.
  • Model instrument properties to monitor and conduct analysis of instrument performance through testing, launch, calibration, and ongoing operations.
  • Apply scientific and engineering expertise to troubleshoot and resolve uncharacteristic instrument behaviors.
  • Collaborate and engage with project scientists, project technical leadership, and other stakeholders regarding progress, status reports, activity summaries, and achievements.
  • Document and communicate your work to peers and customers through informal forums as well as formally in conference and journal publications.
  • Continually research the latest progress in space science instrumentation, novel technologies, and technical or scientific processes to grow our value to the customer.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, engineering or a related field.
  • 8 years of industry experience.
  • Strong research background and experience developing scientific and engineering tools to conduct research and analysis.
  • Experience with the development or operations of coronagraphs, spectrographs, or similar instruments hosted on space missions.

Desired Skills:

 

  • Familiar with NASA GSFC space science objectives.
  • Familiar with algorithm development supporting science observation processing and data distillation, curation, and fusion.

  • Experience with requirements management across development, testing, and operations of instruments.

  • Experience with signal processing, optics, and other sensors within infrared or visible spectrum cameras.

  • Experience with science instrument operations.
