The Assistant Controller will be responsible for managing and overseeing financial records, ensuring the accuracy of financial transactions, and maintaining compliance with industry-specific regulations. The Assistant Controller has a strong understanding of construction accounting, including job costing, project management accounting, and financial reporting.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
- Generate reports on project profitability, cost allocations, and financial performance.
- Assist with the preparation of year-end financial statements and coordinate with external auditors.
- Track and allocate costs for construction projects, ensuring accurate job costing and reporting of labor, materials, subcontractor, and overhead expenses.
- Collaborate with project managers to monitor project budgets and ensure costs remain within scope.
- Prepare and update job cost reports, change orders, and cost-to-complete projections.
- Monitor cash flow and provide accurate forecasts for upcoming projects and operational expenses.
- Assist with managing and optimizing cash flow to ensure sufficient funds for project progress payments and operational needs.
- Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards (GAAP) and industry-specific regulations (e.g., FAR, AIA billing requirements).
- Maintain accurate records for tax filings, including sales tax, payroll taxes, and other applicable taxes.
- Support the preparation of documents and reports for audits and tax filings.
- Work closely with the project management team to track and report on project financials, including forecasting, billing, and cost management.
- Provide financial guidance to department heads to ensure effective budget management and cost control on construction projects.
- Assist with the preparation of bid proposals and estimates by providing relevant cost data.

MINIMUM SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designation preferred
- Minimum 3-5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in the construction industry or a similar field preferred
- Strong understanding of construction accounting practices, including job costing, progress billing, and contract management
- Experience with construction-specific accounting software (e.g., Procore, Sage)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), with advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.)
- Knowledge of relevant tax laws, financial regulations, and industry standards
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/CONDITIONS REQUIREMENTS
- Office-based with potential site visits to construction projects as needed
- Fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with a focus on teamwork and collaboration
- Occasional overtime may be required to meet project deadlines or fiscal year-end needs
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, drive a vehicle, and ability to sit in a constricted space for several hours at a time
