Position Summary
Responsible for evaluating, treating, and caring for patients with breathing disorders. This role involves setting up and operating various respiratory care devices, performing diagnostic procedures, and monitoring patient responses to therapy. Additionally, the practitioner will assist as a mentor for students and new hires, ensuring the next generation of respiratory therapists upholds our high standards of care.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer therapeutic respiratory treatments and diagnostic procedures for patients of all ages.
- Set up and operate mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration devices, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators following prescribed parameters.
- Review patient information, including arterial blood gases and physician prescriptions, to assess and adjust treatment plans accordingly.
- Conduct routine physician-prescribed treatments using Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB) machines, oxygen devices, nebulizers, and ultrasonic nebulizers.
- Monitor patient physiological responses, including vital signs, blood chemistry changes, and arterial blood gases, and consult physicians regarding any adverse reactions.
- Perform chest physiotherapy treatments, such as percussion, postural drainage, and suctioning, to mobilize secretions and clear airway blockages.
- Conduct pulmonary function studies to assess air volume, distribution, and movement within the respiratory system.
- Ensure compliance with all hospital policies, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new hires and students in the respiratory care field.
Qualifications
- Must be a graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program.
- Must obtain entry-level certification and hold a valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Must have a current Indiana State license for Respiratory Care Practitioners.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications required (or must obtain within six months of hire).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and STABLE certifications preferred but not required.
- 2-4 years of direct Respiratory Therapy experience preferred, especially in an acute care respiratory unit or skilled nursing environment.
- Must be available for on-call shifts as needed.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
