Job Description Summary :
The companion is a member of the home care team who works under the supervision of the administrator and spends time with the client to meet the client’s needs, according to the admission agreement or plan of care. The companion is also responsible for observing clients and reporting changes to their supervisor.
The companion is assigned in a manner that promotes quality, continuity, and safety of a client’s care.
Essential Job Responsibilities :
Responsibilities of the companion include, but are not limited to the following :
- Wear identification badge at all times;
- Provide companionship for the client;
- Accompanying the client to doctors’ appointments, recreational outings, or shopping;
- Perform light housekeeping tasks, including :
- Preparation of meals;
- Doing dishes;
- Laundering client’s personal garments, including :
- Washing and drying laundry;
- Folding and putting away laundry.
- Shopping.
- Perform casual cosmetic assistance, including :
- Brushing the client's hair;
- Assisting with make-up;
- Filing and polishing nails, but not clipping nails;
- Stabilize the client when walking, as needed, by holding the client's arm or hand;
- Transportation, including :
- Using agreed upon vehicle;
- Keeping track of related reports and mileage.
- Socialization, including :
- Providing encouragement;
- Being supportive when the client is lonely, bereaved, or depressed;
- Report to the supervisor any incidents, problems, emergencies, or changes in client;
- Maintain appropriate work records;
- If requested by the client, or the client's representative, verbally remind the client that it is time for the client to take their medicine;
- Other tasks which do not require the companion to touch the client.

Job Limitations :
The companion does not function in any manner which requires touching the client or any tasks which may be viewed as the practice of nursing.
Working Conditions :
Contact with clients in their living environment. Travel required. Position has a low risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
Personal Protective Equipment :
May include gloves, mask, eye protection, or disposable outer covering.
