SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to teach general education courses to adults that will assist them with their career growth and achievement. The instructor will perform duties that are instructional and clerical in nature while delivering direct services to adults. The employee will serve in the position for which a teacher or other professional has responsibility in designing and implementing educational lessons, evaluations, remediation plans, activities and other services for participants. The WIOA Title II program is performance-based and it must comply with state and federal mandates; the instructor must follow state standards and approved curriculum for the program, as well as meet the criteria as a proficient instructor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties represent 55% of the work performed for planning, instruction, and evaluating students growth

  • Develop, modify, and evaluate curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of the students, aligns with WIOA, the Illinois ABE/ASE Content Standards and College and Career Readiness Standards
  • Write lesson plans that are based on the Illinois ABE/ASE Content Standards as well as the College and Career Readiness Standards
  • Teach multi-level classes in the core subject areas using evidence-based practices or strategies
  • Refer students directly to post-secondary, vocational, and career opportunities as well as supportive service
  • Provide classroom instruction in Life Skills and Work Readiness content
  • Provide educational and career counseling services
  • Differentiate curriculum, assessments, and/or instruction to meet the needs of the student
  • Evaluate students progress regularly using standardized assessment tools
  • Create and implement students remediation plans
  • Administer career readiness assessments

The following duties represent 35% of the work performed in training, coordinating, implementing student support services, and collaborating with team members, internal departments and external agencies

  • Complete the ICCBs College and Career Readiness Standards Proficient Training for Adult Educators and earn certificate within 6 months of hire date
  • Attend scheduled program meetings and training workshops
  • Each fiscal year, earn at least 12 hours of Professional Development units approved by the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB)
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the world of work, the career pathway framework, to connect these systems to one of the main purposes for adult basic and adult secondary education
  • Collaborate with internal and external career navigators, workforce partners as well as with occupational skill trainers
  • Assess, counsel, and in collaboration with ASHs Opportunity Coaches or Placement team refer students directly to post-secondary, vocational, and/or career opportunities as well as supportive services as needed
  • Work with team members to integrate basic and employability skills, career exploration, and/or technical skills in ABE/ASE instruction using innovative or evidence-based approaches
  • In collaboration with the Director of Education & Employment, the Instruction Team Lead, and the Opportunity Coaches, advise students on their progress and recommend steps to solve any issues that may impede them from completing their program or refer them to the appropriate staff member or external agency
  • Maintain ongoing communication with program instructors, program director, supervisor and case manager to help ensure student achievement

The following duties represent 10% of the work performed in clerical and administrative tasks

  • Maintain current records on all students, including accurate attendance records, progress notes, and remediation plans
  • Submit program, student progress, and assessment reports as schedule by program director
  • Other appropriate duties as assigned by Instruction Team Lead

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS

Education/Experience Required

  • Bachelors degree (B.A./B.S.) from 4-year college or university and 3 years experience teaching adults; as well as experience in teaching content specific areas of language arts and/or math

Certificates/Licenses Required

  • Teachers Certification or meet the Proficient Instructors Criteria
  • Mandated Reporter Certificate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in education or related field

  • Ability to adhere to policy and follow instructions
  • Ability to interpret education materials to determine if text is aligned with Illinois ABE/ASE Content Standards as well as Common Core and College and Career Standards
  • Working knowledge of teaching adults and principles of adult education
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals and different personalities
  • Ability to be creative and work in a mission-driven, community-oriented organization
  • Ability to employ crisis intervention strategies
  • Ability to build working relationships with students and people from other agencies
  • Ability to work independently and make appropriate judgments calls when necessary
  • Ability to be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and highly organized
  • Ability to accept criticism and feedback well
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent periods of moderate noise
  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to correctly judge distances and spatial relationships
  • Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree (B.A./B.S.) from four-year college or university and three years experience teaching adults.
  • Certificates, licenses and registrations required:
    • Teachers Certification or Meet the Proficient Instructors Criteria preferred.
