Job Description: Facilities Technician

Reports To: Operations Coordinator

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Takes Direction From: Executive Team, Senior Team

Calendar: Operations Calendar

Job Summary

The Facilities Technician is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the school’s facilities. It is essential that the person for this role is organized, able to multitask, work flexibly and independently, and have a ‘can do’ approach to work, as no two days are the same. They should have a general working knowledge of what it takes to maintain a school facility including electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.

Certifications and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current (dated within a year) Act 34, 114, and 151 clearances
  • Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing, and carpentry
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work independently in person or virtually as needed

Essential Duties

  • Assemble furniture and equipment
  • Assist in the Operations Coordinator with implementing room layouts, moving furniture, supplies, etc.
  • Assist the Custodial staff with moving furniture, rubber floor mats, equipment, and any other items so that the areas may be cleaned
  • Assist the Operations Coordinator in receiving and distributing deliveries
  • Assist the Operations Team with facilities improvement projects such as painting, moving furniture, and any other project, as directed
  • Assist the Operations Team with setups for community education activities, meetings, and other events, as directed
  • Change light bulbs and maintain light fixtures on the interior and exterior of the building and on the grounds
  • Communicate with constituents and stakeholders as it relates to the essential duties of this position
  • Complete routine and preventative maintenance of all facility systems, leveraging vendor relationships, where needed
  • Conduct regular inspections of the facilities to ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the school's facility
  • Conduct regular maintenance of the school building and respond to maintenance requests in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ensure a safe environment at all times, to include not allowing students access to materials, equipment, and/or any other items that may be deemed dangerous
  • Ensure that all relevant furniture and equipment has anti-tip and/or locking hardware installed and ensure that it continues to remain in safe working order
  • Ensure that the facility is safe for use during inclement weather events, to include but not limited to de-icing, shoveling, monitoring of leakage
  • Ensure that the school's common areas are clean, tidy, organized, and free from trash, broken items, etc
  • Ensure that the school's exterior is free from dangerous items to include but not limited to nails, screws, downed limbs, etc
  • Ensure that the school's interior is free from dangerous items to include but not limited to loose hardware, broken glass, etc.
  • Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of all facilities equipment
  • Ensure the safe and effective use of products, in accordance with their labels
  • Ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operations of all school property and facilities, to include but not limited to the buildings, grounds, and vehicles
  • Ensure the school's vehicles are clean, in good working order, with adequate gasoline, and schedule and execute the vehicle's regular maintenance
  • Ensure the successful completion of all regular nightly, weekly, monthly, and quarterly tasks, as well as any facility needs submitted via the school's communication systems
  • Hold a high standard of integrity and ethics
  • Maintain an understanding of industry-specific trends, activities, and best practices
  • Maintain and adequate supply of tools, equipment, and supplies
  • Maintain appropriate records related to the duties of this position
  • Maintain compliance with insurance policies, best practices, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations
  • Maintain HVAC systems including installing, moving, de-installing window air conditioner units
  • Must maintain at all times during employment an unrestricted motor vehicle operator's license and a satisfactory driving record that meets the requirements of the school's policy
  • Paint, remodel, repair, refurbish, areas as needed
  • Perform deep cleaning of the school's facilities
  • Perform other building maintenance tasks as assigned or directed
  • Perform the full range of cleaning tasks in assigned areas, to include offices, corridors, stairwells, classrooms, bathrooms, therapy spaces, sensory rooms, etc.
  • Provide facility-type security services such as building checks
  • Remove and dispose of facility waste in an appropriate manner
  • Replenish and replace paper towels, toilet paper, soap, air fresheners, and any other relevant facility supplies
  • Schedule movers, disposal, dumpsters, plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, and any other contracted maintenance as required and pre-approved
  • Schedule, obtain, operate, and return vehicles rented for moving
  • Supplement contracted maintenance such as snow removal, pest control, etc.
  • Under the supervision of the Operations Coordinator (Facility and Equity Systems), implement creative, innovative, and special needs-informed solutions to facilities issues

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • To read and abide by the Employee Handbook including updates and changes
  • To attend all mandatory meetings, including those that fall outside of regularly scheduled school hours and as described in the Employee Handbook
  • Adhere to A Step Up Academy’s policies, procedures, and methodologies

Organizational Relationships & Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly accountable to the supervisor listed above and, in the absence of that individual, to the Director of Operations
  • This position does not have direct reports

  • Moderate degree of physical stamina, with frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds and the possibility of lifting and/or carrying up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending
  • Frequent use of powered and non-powered tools, specialized equipment, and industry-specific materials
  • Ability to move through the physical space of the building which may or may not require stairs, distances, and the operation of doors and gates
  • Able to use ladders
  • Moving light furniture may be required
  • Adequate vision and hearing ability for monitoring the verbal and non-verbal responses of students
  • May require driving school vehicles operated under a standard driver’s license
  • Exposure to noise and activity of a special needs school setting
  • May involve exposure to communicable diseases and other adverse conditions
  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions

Equipment/Material Handled

The individual in this position shall be assigned a variety of resources and materials which are to be appropriately stored and accounted for. All media resources and borrowed material are to be judiciously used, and are to be maintained in a reasonably unsoiled and non- damaged fashion. Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.
