Description

A.T. Still University (ATSU) is seeking a full-time assistant or associate professor in the Department of Microbiology Immunology at the Kirksville, MO campus. The successful applicant must demonstrate strong potential to develop an independent research program in medical microbiology (preferred, any subdiscipline) or immunology, and become an innovative teacher for graduate and professional students enrolled in the Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, and Biomedical Sciences & Dental Sciences courses. Faculty will have opportunities to supervise research performed by students in the medical (DO), dental (DMD), and biomedical sciences (MS) programs.

Requirements

Major Job Duties

  • Present 20-40 lectures per year to medical, dental, and biomedical sciences students enrolled in the Medical Microbiology, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases courses at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, and in the Biomedical Sciences & Dental Sciences course at the Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health.
  • Develop and/or revise learning objectives, lecture notes, slideshows, supplemental media (e.g., videos or podcasts) and assessment tools for these courses.
  • Develop cases and facilitate small group case-based exercises for department courses.
  • Develop and teach wet labs for Medical Microbiology and Immunology.
  • Collaborate with faculty in the basic science and clinical departments to develop and deliver interdisciplinary educational content.
  • Develop an independent research program in the field of medical microbiology (preferred), or immunology.
  • Show evidence of research productivity by publishing results in refereed journals and presenting findings at national or international research conferences.
  • Seek extramural research funding within 3 years of hiring.
  • Mentor biomedical, medical, and/or dental students in research projects.
  • Interview applicants for the medical and biomedical sciences programs.
  • Serve on college and university committees as assigned.
  • Write COMLEX board questions and/or serve on NBOME item review committees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair and/or Dean of KCOM.

Education/Experience

  • A doctorate degree with graduate training in microbiology (preferred) or immunology is required.
  • At least 2 years of postdoctoral training or the equivalent.
  • Evidence of prior research productivity, e.g., published manuscripts, conference presentations, and funded research grants.
  • Applicants with prior teaching experience in higher education will be given preference.

  • Ability to present clear, concise, and engaging lectures to medical, biomedical, and dental students
  • Ability to facilitate and assess student performance in the small group setting
  • Ability to develop innovative teaching, learning, and assessment tools and techniques
  • Ability to effectively utilize the communication and technical skills required to conduct a competitive and successful research program

Equipment

  • The successful applicant will be proficient in the use of instrumentation fundamental to their area of research.
  • The successful applicant will be proficient in the use of computers and software essential for delivery of educational content, e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and the Canvas web-based learning management system.

  • The applicant must have excellent communication skills in lecture (large-audience), small group, and individualized settings.

  • The applicant should be resilient and tenacious while pursuing external grants to support their research.

Additional Information

  • New faculty are provided seed money to help establish their research programs.
  • The spacious laboratory occupied by the successful applicant was built in Spring 2024. It includes a separate cell culture room equipped with CO2 incubator, laminar flow hood, and anaerobic chamber. Equipment available in the main laboratory include a fume hood, ultracold freezers, standard refrigerators, high speed and microcentrifuges, a Nanodrop spectrophotometer, shaking incubator, PCR machines, gel electrophoresis cells and power supplies, digital balance, pH meter, micropipetter sets, and other standard molecular biology instruments.
  • Shared equipment available in the department includes an autoclave; Bioscreen C MBR automated microbiology growth analysis system; UVP Bio-Imaging System (gel documentation); Genepix 4000B microarray slide scanner; iCycler iQ5 real-time and standard PCR machines; a qRT-PCR system; multiplexing luminescence / fluorescence imaging system; cooling/heating microtube shaker; additional ultracold and -20C freezers; liquid nitrogen cryogenic freezer; walk-in refrigerator and walk-in incubator; UV/visible and fluorescence spectrophotometers; microplate ELISA readers; gel electrophoresis (1-D, 2-D, agarose) and immunoblotting rigs with power supplies; electroporator; sonicator; light field, fluorescence, and inverted microscopes; vacuum evaporator system; plate-pouring machine; and water distillation apparatus. A shared laboratory technician is available to help with dishwashing, media preparation, and hands-on research. A dedicated sequencing lab in the department is equipped with an Ion Torrent PGM system, Ion One Touch 2 system, Eppendorf PCR thermocycler, CBS Scientific Optimizer PCR workstation P-048-202, Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer desktop system with both the electrophoresis and flow cytometry cartridges and chip-prep IKA vortex and accessories, SterilGard III Advance laminar flow biological safety hood, Barnstead MicroPure water purification system, Qubit 3.0 fluorometer, accuSpin Micro17 microcentrifuge, and tabletop freezer. ATSU's Core Facility instruments include an Hitachi TM3000 scanning electron microscope, Leica DMI6000 B confocal laser scanning microscope, digital pathology slide scanner, wet lab for immunohistochemistry, and Bio-Rad S3 fluorescence activated cell sorter. KCOM promotes faculty research by providing use of the core facility equipment and consultation services by the core technologist and core director free-of-charge. Of special note, the AALAS-accredited animal care facility provides care to small animals for investigators without per diem charges.
  • KCOM's Research Reinvestment policy allows faculty to supplement their salaries from extramural grants. Salary obtained from grants is in addition to the faculty member's regular salary.
