What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Backpacking and Hiking Guide position at A Walk in the Woods Guide Service?

Working as a backpacking/eco-camp guide is a rewarding position for those committed to offering the best in customer service. With A Walk in the Woods, we teach a multitude of skills, such as hiking, backpacking, survival skills and Leave No Trace Ethics. Not only do we teach the skills of ethical recreation in the backcountry, we will also be sharing interpretation of the plants and animals that make our area so biodiverse.
A Walk in the Woods Guide Service has been sharing our mission of providing direct, positive experiences in nature and promoting environmental awareness for 26 years! Currently we are looking to hire enthusiastic guides to run backpacking trips, eco glamping trips and day hikes for the 2025 season. Preferred candidates will love to hike, backpack and camp, rain or shine, and don´t mind getting their hands dirty. We are looking for team players who are eager to share their love of nature and history to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Ideal candidates understand the behind the scenes nature of the tourism industry and are eager to jump in any position that is needed.
This is a full-time seasonal position running from March through mid- November, you can expect 2-3 overnight backpacking trips (60 hours/trip) a month and 1-2 weeks of guiding day hikes, driving and behind the scenes work. We offer competitive hourly pay and this is a tipped position. We are looking for candidates who are Wilderness First Responder Certified, experienced in backpacking and hiking, and are well versed in Leave No Trace. We are willing to help with these certifications for the right candidates. Some housing options are available, and we are willing to help you acquire housing off site. Our full time guides average $3000 a month depending on number of trips.
In this position you will be required to lead nature programs and educational walks, help set up and deconstruct our Eco-Camp, and be physically able to carry a 35-40lbs pack over a four day backpacking trip. A Walk in the Woods has been contracting with REI adventure travel for 18 years and many of these trips will be REI adventure programs. You will be representing both A Walk in the Woods and REI adventures at various times.
