Job Description Summary: The Advocate with Legal Duties position provides advocacy support and empowerment to clients of A Woman's Place (an inclusive domestic violence shelter located in Greeley, Colorado). Position will provide general advocacy support and will be available to also provide legal advocacy, as needed, including assistance with temporary protection order paperwork, address confidentiality, and referrals to legal resources. This position works 31 hours per week with the option to work additional hours. The work schedule is Monday-Wednesday 1-6pm, Saturday 4pm-midnight, Sunday 4pm-midnight.
Job Responsibilities
1. Maintain confidentiality of client information and the safehouse location.
2. Provide crisis phone line coverage.
3. Provide individualized advocacy support to participants (intake, needs assessments, and create individual service plan).
4. Empower residents and assist with safety planning and community resources.
5. Provide residential and non-residential domestic violence victims with information about the legal process and resources available through the civil and criminal legal systems.
6. Provide referrals to legal resources and other agency services for legal needs as necessary.
7. Assist residential and non-residential clients with appropriate civil protection order paperwork.
8. Assist Bringing Justice Home and other attorneys as appropriate with legal appointments, client
releases, and communication.
9. Obtain Address Confidentiality Program certification.
10. Complete accurate documentation and statistics.
11. Maintaining shelter cleanliness including client rooms, common areas and receiving donations.
12. Work cooperatively with other staff, interns, donors, and community partners.
13. Maintain accurate and timely data records of activities, client notes, and other services provided.
Skills and Abilities
1. Ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines and manage workflow.
2. Proven computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
3. Strong ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
4. Strong attention to detail.
5. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
6. Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
7. Bilingual preferred.
Requirements
Education: Associates Degree OR equivalent work experience.
Experience: 1-2 years of advocacy experience preferred. Knowledge of legal system, women’s issues, domestic violence, and community resources preferred.
Physical Demands: Typing, Bending, Twisting, Standing, Climbing Stairs, Reaching above shoulder height, Lifting/Carrying up to 40 pounds.
