The Certified Surgical First Assist is a vital role within the surgical team, providing essential support to surgeons in a variety of surgical procedures. The Certified Surgical First Assist plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety and optimizing surgical outcomes by assisting the lead surgeon during operations. The individual in this role must possess strong clinical expertise and the ability to work collaboratively with medical personnel, adapting quickly to the dynamic environment of the operating room. This position not only involves technical skills but also the ability to communicate effectively with the patient and surgical team. The Certified Surgical First Assist contributes significantly to improving patient outcomes and enhancing the efficiency of surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgeon directly during surgical procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain the sterile field throughout surgery.
  • Manage surgical instruments and supplies before, during, and after procedures.
  • Provide hemostasis and suturing assistance as required.
  • Work collaboratively with surgical team to optimize workflow.
  • Monitor the patient's vital signs and other indicators during surgery.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and anticipate necessary supplies.
  • Document surgical procedures and maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate effectively with operating room staff and hospital personnel.
  • Participate in preoperative and postoperative patient education.
  • Assist with patient positioning and draping prior to surgery.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and best practices for surgical procedures.
  • Conduct post-surgical assessments and assist in the recovery process.
  • Engage in continuous education to stay updated with surgical advancements.
  • Support the surgical team in quality improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Surgical First Assistant certification from an accredited body.
  • Graduate of a surgical assistant program.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and anatomy.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a surgical first assistant.
  • Strong clinical and technical skills in an operating room setting.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Familiarity with operating room protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient in surgical technology and instruments.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and education.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance and patient safety standards.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends.
