A3 Technology, Inc. is seeking a Mid-Level Systems Engineer with expertise in communication systems engineering and systems integration to support research on communication requirements between Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Remote Pilots in Command (RPIC) for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). This role focuses on enabling seamless integration of UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS) by addressing ground-to-ground (G-G) and air-to-ground (A-G) communication performance requirements.
This position can be located in Washington, DC or Egg Harbor Township, NJ.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify gaps in current communication capabilities, develop performance requirements and propose solutions to optimize the integration of remotely piloted operations.
- Conduct comprehensive reviews and analyses of ground-based and satellite-based communication systems, including VHF, HF, SATCOM, VOIP and others.
- Develop and document performance requirements for G-G and A-G communication systems, focusing on functionality, latency, reliability and voice quality.
- Identify gaps in current communication capabilities between RPIC-ATC and PIC-ATC systems.
- Support the development of engineering deliverables, including performance requirements, technical assessments, gap analyses and integration documentation.
- Collaborate with FAA stakeholders, operations specialists and technical teams to ensure project milestones and deliverables are met.
- Participate in stakeholder engagements, technical interchange meetings (TIMs) and tabletop exercises to validate findings and recommendations.
- Explore emerging technologies and innovative solutions to enhance communication capabilities for manned and unmanned aviation operations.
- Provide systems engineering expertise to align research findings with FAA regulations and NAS operational standards.
Skills Required:
- Proficiency in communication network technologies, including VOIP, VHF, HF, SATCOM and their applications in air traffic management.
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and integration methodologies in the context of aviation and communication systems.
- Ability to analyze complex systems and identify performance requirements, functionality gaps and optimization opportunities.
- Experience with technical documentation, including gap analysis, performance requirements and system architecture design.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder engagement, technical reporting and presentations.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities to address technical challenges and propose feasible solutions.
- Experience working in regulated environments, such as FAA or aviation-related fields, is highly desirable.
Skills Preferred:
- Familiarity with FAA regulations and the National Airspace System (NAS).
- Experience with air-to-ground and air-to-air communication protocols and integration challenges.
- Knowledge of advanced communication technologies, including AI-based systems, blockchain for secure communication and 5G.
- Familiarity with aviation operations, including UAS and manned aircraft coordination.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with cross-disciplinary stakeholders.
- Experience with modeling and simulation tools for evaluating communication system performance.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field and 6-10 years relevant experience OR
- Master's degree in a related field and 3-7 years relevant experience.
Additionally, US Citizenship or documented proof of eligibility to work in the US is a must. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, candidates will undergo a Government investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for Government clearance.
