Who are we looking for?
As a key member of our team, you’ll support the organization’s core values and operating principles by managing a variety of tax and regulatory reporting responsibilities. This role is responsible for the accurate preparation, review, and filing of premium tax returns, state insurance filings, and annual reports in compliance with corporate guidelines, IRS regulations, and state tax and insurance laws.
Responsibilities
How will you contribute?
In this role, you will be responsible for researching state laws related to guaranty assessments and credits, maintaining accurate carryforward schedules for asset accounts, and tracking payments and due dates. You will also prepare and file all premium and municipal tax returns—both estimated and annual—along with related payments and reconciliation reports. This includes creating and maintaining detailed supporting workpapers.
You'll collaborate with the IT department to coordinate premium tax software updates and ensure smooth operation of reporting software used for premium taxes, miscellaneous state insurance filings, annual reports, and state withholding. Additionally, you will prepare, file, and reconcile annuity product and claims state withholding tax returns and associated payments.
A critical part of your responsibilities will include balancing state and federal withholding on a quarterly and annual basis to ensure the accuracy of 1099 forms. You will amend state and federal filings when necessary and manage the setup of new accounts for state withholding, unemployment, and workers' compensation for remote employees in new jurisdictions. This includes filing quarterly and annual reconciliation reports and handling payments for taxes, workers’ compensation, and annual license fees.
You will also prepare, review, and track various finance and insurance-related filings. Your role will involve calculating accruals for premium tax liabilities, filing fees, and guaranty assessments, and posting the appropriate journal entries. Assisting in reconciling these liabilities to supporting documentation will also be key.
Collaboration across departments is essential. You will help coordinate efforts with Legal, Compliance, and Actuarial teams to support statutory filing requirements, data calls, and surveys. Maintaining an up-to-date tax calendar with all return and payment due dates is crucial, as is monitoring legislative and regulatory changes that impact premium tax forms and rates.
You’ll request various compliance documents from states of domicile and respond to inquiries from state insurance and tax departments. The role also includes researching and developing process improvements, supporting financial reporting, assisting with audits, and taking on additional duties as assigned.
Proficiency with general ledger systems, Excel, Word, Access, and other applicable business software is required to succeed in this position.
Qualifications
What do you offer?
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or similar business-related field required. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of education requirement.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an accounting or finance role. Tax experience, specifically in corporate state tax or tax compliance, is preferred.
- ALMI or FMLI designation plus.
- Notary Public plus.
Extensive experience/knowledge of:
- Preparing & reviewing state premium tax filings
- Preparing & reviewing state annual report filings
- Preparing miscellaneous finance/compliance reports related to insurance companies
- Calculating and tracking of guaranty fund assessments and related offsets
- State withholding requirements on annuity products including required payments/reports
- Tracking multi-company/multi-jurisdiction due dates to achieve deadlines
- Business-related software including Word, Excel, and Access
- Coordinating and controlling program testing and special projects
- Entering and balancing journal entries
- Preparing, balancing, and researching account reconciliations
