AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a paid summer internship within our SciLine department!
SciLine seeks an intern to research newsworthy topics using scientific literature and other high-quality information sources and support the production of editorial content geared towards helping journalists with their news coverage. Collaborating closely with SciLine's Manager of Journalism Projects & Multimedia. The intern will support SciLine's mission of providing scientific evidence and expertise to enrich U.S. reporting.

What You’ll Do
This is a remote internship, however, those in or near the D.C. area have the option to work from our D.C. office and attend in-person events, typically 1-2 times per week. This is a 12-week internship, which will run from June 2, 2025 - August 22, 2025. The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $18.50 per hour. What You’ll Do
- Conduct research on designated topics, such as climate impacts and infectious diseases, using primary scientific literature and other sources of high-quality data
- Distill complex science into concise summaries and key statistics that will feed into the production of SciLine's editorial products, such as Quick Facts and the SciLine newsletter
- Identify and pitch to SciLine’s editorial team news topics that could benefit from scientific context
- Assist as needed with other aspects of editorial content production, such as fact checking, building reference lists, and web production
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (or transitioning between the two) at a university/college (science majors preferred)
- Deep familiarity with scientific literature and ability to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of scientific evidence and information sources
- Detail-oriented and organized, with strong project management skills
- Excellent writing and science communication skills
- Understanding of and enthusiasm about the societal role of the news media is a plus
