As a key member of the AAHOA Advocacy / Government Affairs Team, the State & Local Government Affairs Director reports to the Senior Director of Government Affairs and works on a government affairs team of three professionals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Represent AAHOA and its policy positions to stakeholders in key states around the country, including policymakers and influencers, relevant state professional societies, trade associations, and other organizations
- Lead day-to-day external partner relationships and coordinate with AAHOA’s Government Affairs Team on priorities
- Monitor key public policy opportunities and risks for the association and its members, alerting internal stakeholders about them and assisting the Senior Director of Government Affairs with corresponding actions
- Analyze and interpret legislation and rulemakings that would have an impact on the hospitality industry and AAHOA Members
- Track development of state and local legislation and regulations of interest to AAHOA Members
- Exude a reputation for ethical conduct and commitment to ethical behavior
- Maintain an understanding of state and local regulatory requirements regarding lobbying, fundraising, and political contributions
- Develop public affairs and policy-oriented messaging and materials for education of and engagement with key stakeholders
- Monitor and evaluate political, legislative, and regulatory developments relevant for AAHOA and effectively communicating them to internal and external audiences
- Follow key trends in the political, media, hospitality, and economic landscape, monitoring for coverage or major developments that impact AAHOA, its competitors, and the larger business environment
- Draft, edit, review, and revise strategic and project-specific messaging and materials (briefing documents, talking points, FAQs, etc.)
- Organize and execute activities and events to advance AAHOA’s state government affairs strategies
- Establish, engage, and manage professional contacts and networks
- Attend internal and external meetings, conferences
- Build internal relationships with cross-functional colleagues in areas such as marketing, finance, franchise relations, events, etc., as to drive and maintain alignment between Government Affairs and other association functions
