AARP's Policy, Research and International Affairs leads the development and communication of AARP's public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to people 50-plus.

Fine-tune your research skills, engage in a social mission organization focused on people age 50 and older, and build your professional network. Join Consumer Insights Research at AARP for a paid internship in applied research, data analysis, and data visualization. You will have a chance to do meaningful work with the largest social welfare organization in the country. You will have the opportunity to make relevant professional contacts. This position is an excellent way for a talented graduate student interested in social science and marketing research to acquire hands-on experience as part of a small, committed, professional team. We'll challenge you to think and work in new ways. We are committed to your growth and will cultivate your continued learning and development. This is a paid internship with an anticipated start date of Spring 2025 and an end date of December 2025, and it may have the option to continue for additional semesters.

Responsibilities

The intern will work on various quantitative and qualitative research projects on issues that affect mid-life and older adults.

Tasks include :

  • Fact-checking reports & writing backgrounds for reports
  • Data mining public datasets & secondary data analysis
  • Preparing graphics for presentations
  • Designing surveys
  • Conducting and summarizing basic data analyses
  • Synthesizing research findings to produce actionable insights
  • Creating Infographics
  • Creating data visualizations
  • An array of other research-related tasks

Qualifications

  • Prospective interns must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university, remain academically enrolled throughout the internship, and be a graduate or post-doctoral student.
  • Students pursuing their Ph.D. degree in social sciences, communications, policy, or business are encouraged to apply
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve issues creatively and independently
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail
  • Knowledge of applied research practices such as survey design and analysis
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (particularly PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Excel)
  • Familiarity with SPSS required; familiarity with data visualization such as Tableau or infographics preferred
  • Time commitment of up to 40 hours per week
  • AARP will not sponsor an employment visa for this position at this time.

    AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.

    Compensation and Benefits

    The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
