What are the responsibilities and job description for the Digital Journalism Intern position at AARP?
Responsibilities
Report and write digital content (articles, blog posts, quizzes, etc.) about topics of interest to AARP’s age 50 audience, including but not limited to health, wellness, jobs, retirement, and personal finances Enter content into content management systems, electronically route files to relevant departments (edit, art, copy edit, research, production), track progress, and ensure timely and accurate publication of content Assist with search engine optimization (SEO) of digital content to improve ranking in organic search results, including but not limited to writing metadata and conducting basic keyword research Assist with researching topics of interest to AARP’s age 50 audience, including but not limited to monitoring competing publishers, mining social media trends, and analyzing past performance of AARP content Assist editors with copy editing and fact-checking of content before publication Qualifications Must be enrolled in a Journalism (or equivalent) degree program at an accredited college or university as rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or postdoctoral students and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship, or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program Demonstrated ability to report and write content, both short- and long-form, based on established journalism standards for news reporting and writing (please provide published clips / portfolio of work) Comfort working in various digital publishing systems, including a content management system (CMS) Must be collaborative, organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and possess the ability to meet deadlines consistently Eagerness to learn about various facets of digital publishing is a must Experience with search engine optimization (SEO) best practices and tools (e.g., Conductor, Semrush) and / or web analytics tools (e.g., Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics) is a plus AARP will not sponsor an employment visa for this position at this time. Additional Requirements Regular and reliable job attendance Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships In office / open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise Effective verbal and written communication skills Hybrid Work Environment AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories. Compensation and Benefits The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
