The Writer/Editor (Social Security) is tasked with developing and implementing written or scripted content that addresses financial aspects of Social Security for publications, books, and digital platforms. This role requires strong partnerships with both internal teams and external collaborators to ensure the effective production and publication of high-quality materials.
The Editor will ensure all content meets established publishing policies regarding format and quality. Additionally, this position involves collaboration with other AARP departments to promote key financial programs, advocacy campaigns, and priorities related to Social Security and personal finance management.
A key responsibility of the Writer/Editor (Social Security) is to demonstrate the ability to report, research, and write about complex financial subjects in engaging and innovative ways while adhering to established procedures and style guidelines. The Editor will leverage available tools and resources to generate content ideas and optimize materials based on digital publishing best practices, ensuring that critical financial information is accessible and relevant to the audience.

- Works with other team members, including writers, editors, project managers, subject-matter experts, marketing and outreach directors, and senior executives to create and deliver timely, high quality, and relevant content for digital, print and other platforms.
- Employs digital analytics tools and resources to identify topics of interest to a 50 audience and to evaluate the performance of content after publication.
- Writes and edits content for internal and external audiences and ensures that all content is consistent in voice, tone, and style, and that messaging is customized and aligned for the intended audience.
- Enters content into content/publishing management systems or other tracking tools, monitoring workflow, and collaborating with production staff to ensure published content is accurate and high-quality.
- Partners with team members to identify success stories. Contributes ideas and content for content and storytelling plans. Identifies and shares opportunities for public and media relations and thought leadership initiatives.
- Recommends process improvements related to content development, editing, and delivery of publications/written materials.
- May be responsible for assigning and editing content from internal and external contributors, cultivating a network of qualified contributors, and generating contracts, as needed, for external contributors.
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field.
- 5 years of experience in journalism or related publishing roles.
- In-depth knowledge of all aspects of Social Security, including benefits mechanics and funding policy options.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills with a proven ability to produce high-quality consumer-facing journalism across various formats and platforms, including digital.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with current publishing best practices in both print and online media.
- Experience in assigning and editing content from internal and external contributors, along with building a network of qualified contributors.
- Proficient in digital analytics tools to identify topics of interest for a 50 audience and assess content performance post-publication.
- Experience with content publishing/management systems, including workflow monitoring and collaboration with production staff to ensure accurate and visually appealing published content that adheres to best practices.
