Lead Research Scientist I
Position Objective:
The individual will direct a team of scientists, including mentoring activities, directing completion of research plans and reports, and directing day-to-day laboratory management for execution a variety of product development activities within the department. The individual will also serve as Principal Scientist and support analytical chemistry at ABB in North America.

Ability to direct time and resources of a 4 FTE biology/biotech laboratory
Familiarity with StageGate project management
Familiarity with LIMS systems and practices
Laboratory chemical hygiene and safety
Familiarity with analytical equipment and methods, particularly chromatography and spectroscopy
Mentoring junior scientists
Specific Areas of Expertise
Familiarity with one or more of the following areas:
Laboratory management
Fermentation Science/Bioprocessing
Analytical Chemistry (special emphasis in chromatography, mass spectrometry, NIR/MIR spectroscopy)
Laboratory Skills
Expertise in:
design new techniques and procedures
Maintaining stock chemical ingredients
Perform standard assays and quantifications in specific area of expertise
Setup, calibration, and troubleshooting of commonly used equipment
Other techniques as required by the field of expertise
Able to implement protocols from the literature or from other labs.
Demonstrates familiarity in specific area-relevant literature and current issues.
Documentation
Works with direct reports to maintain and update laboratory research records as required.
Works with direct reports to create and update StageGate Charts, Project Charters, Experimental Plans, and any other allied documentation for all assigned projects.
Works with direct reports to create and update other documentation such as standard operating procedures and experimental protocols.
Works with direct reports in the preparation of technical reports.
Data Analysis
Working knowledge of statistics and ability to use statistical software (SAS JMP preferred)
Works with direct reports to perform statistical data analysis and interpretation.
Works with direct reports to create and implement experimental designs.
Works with direct reports to employ the appropriate statistical tests required for the project.
Communications and Mentoring
Communicates well and works agreeably within the team.
Trains and mentors direct reports, interns and R&D technicians.
Mentors other ABB employees in other locales.
Human Resources
Complies with all HR policies and procedures.
Complies with relevant employment laws.
Other
Complies with safety regulations within the lab and the company.
Keeps current in field by attending conferences, workshops and courses to improve job performance.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A combination of the listed skills and knowledge is preferred
MS in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field and 4-9 years of laboratory experience.
PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field and 0-2 years of laboratory experience.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk, hear and smell. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is sometimes exposed to airborne particles and chemicals. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
