ABBY KELLEY FOSTER CHARTER PUBLIC SCHOOL 10 New Bond Street Worcester, MA 01606 Phone: (508) 854-8400 Fax: (508) 854-8484 www.akfcs.org Job Title: First Shift Custodian Location: Facilities Department Reports To: Director of Facilities Subordinates: None Position Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt Salary: Based on Experience, Hourly, $17.98 - $20 Per Hour POSITION SUMMARY: The First Shift Custodian performs cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure a safe and sanitary environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position works under the direction of assigned staff, attends and participates in meetings, training, and other events, and complies with all Abby Kelley Foster policies and procedures. The custodian will model the character virtues and mission of the school. This job description is intended to convey information essential to understanding the scope of this position and is not an exhaustive list of skills, efforts, duties, responsibilities, or working conditions associated with the position. WORK SCHEDULE: Shift: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM Days: Monday – Friday (occasional weekends as needed for special events) Snow Days: Employees are expected to report to work and meet in the HS Pump Room for 7AM, unless otherwise instructed by the Director of Facilities. The Facilities Director will communicate any changes to this requirement in advance to the Team. The Facilities Director reserves the right to send employees home from work in the event circumstances of the day pose a safety concern. Employees sent home will be paid for the hours worked in accordance to Massachusetts laws. School Vacations: Employees are expected to report to work and meet in the HS Pump Room for 7AM. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Sweep, mop, scrub, and wax floors. Vacuum rugs and carpets. Dust, wax, wash, and polish furniture and woodwork. Clean restrooms, replenish supplies, and refill dispensers. Maintain areas adjacent to buildings, ensuring cleanliness and safety. Wash windows, walls, sinks, and fountains. Arrange and move furniture and equipment for special activities. Observe and report on the need for repairs. Pick up trash and litter and empty/clean trash and garbage receptacles. Perform emergency cleanup resulting from vandalism, breakage, spills, floods, or illness. Stack, move, assemble, and store furniture, equipment, and supplies. Clean chalkboards and trays. Report unruly student activities, loitering, vandalism, or similar situations. Receive, store, order, and distribute supplies. Assist with lunch and breakfast schedules, ensuring cafeterias are clean and ready for use. Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS: No experience required, but previous custodial or janitorial work is desirable. High school diploma or equivalent, or any combination of training and experience likely to provide the desired knowledge. Regular attendance and punctuality. Physical condition and fitness sufficient to perform all required duties. Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning various types of surfaces and furniture. Knowledge of basic safety practices related to custodial work. Ability to perform heavy physical labor. Ability to work effectively without close supervision. Operate specialized cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment. Follow a work schedule and complete assigned tasks. Maintain basic work records and make reports or purchase orders as needed. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues, students, and visitors. Ability to handle stressful situations and effectively manage time and responsibilities. EQUIPMENT USED: Cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment, including but not limited to vacuums, floor polishers, washers (e.g., Kiavac), floor strippers, scrubbing equipment, and office equipment such as computers, copiers, and calculators. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily indoors but may require occasional outdoor tasks. Noise levels can vary from moderate to loud, depending on the task. Some activities may generate dust and/or non-toxic fumes. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Frequently required to walk, stand, travel between buildings, push heavy equipment, twist at the neck and waist, reach, and kneel. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to lift and/or carry up to 60 pounds. Compensation and Benefits: Full-Time, Non-Exempt Position with compensation based on relevant experience. This position is not on a salary scale.
