ABC News is seeking an experienced journalist and manager to serve as the NY Bureau Chief. Reporting to the Vice President of Newsgathering, the Bureau Chief will manage news teams based in the Eastern half of the United States, except for Washington, D.C.
The role requires leading teams in breaking news and in day-to-day coverage. The Bureau Chief will oversee the safety of coverage teams in conflict or hazardous situations.
The Bureau Chief will work collaboratively with editorial partners across all ABC News platforms to decide what stories we should cover, who should staff them, and how to allocate resources. The position will be responsible for designing coverage plans while balancing tight budgets with creative story telling.
The Bureau Chief will collaborate closely with the director of news services to direct resources to the most important stories of the day driving toward news division priorities.
The individual will be expected to serve as a mentor to members of the news gathering team, supporting their professional growth while motivating them to perform at their best.
Responsibilities:
In coordination with the VP of Newsgathering, make decisions as to what stories to cover and how those stories are reported
Guide ABC News’ correspondents, reporters and producers during breaking news situations in the Eastern US
Work collaboratively with editorial leaders and colleagues to deliver breaking news and investigative stories for all platforms
Provide timely and constructive feedback to the team
Champion an innovative, highly collaborative, diverse culture that promotes idea generation, open communication, respect for others, and excellence
Execute ABC News policies/objectives while maintaining the highest level of ethics and standards
Manage a team of journalists by giving frequent performance feedback and facilitating career development and skill growth
Oversee budget and administration of bureaus in the Eastern US
Minimum Qualifications:
10 years of news experience
3 years of experience managing a team
Demonstrated professional experience working in a news organization in progressively more responsible roles
Proven record of exercising strong editorial judgment
Ability to make quick decisions in breaking news situations
Excellent communication and organizational skills and attention to detail
Demonstrated experience identifying new ways of producing and covering news and seeking out new strategies
Strong relationship builder with experience working across a matrixed organization at all levels
Proven ability to lead and motivate a team, encouraging collaboration and sharing of ideas
Experience working with on-air talent
Preferred Qualifications:
Field producing experience
10 years of experience managing journalists
Required Education:
BA or equivalent work experience
The hiring range for this position in New York, NY is $226,800.00 to $311,850.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
