TITLE: High School Guidance Counselor
STATUS: Certified
TERM OF SERVICE: 232 Days
SUPERVISOR: Principal or Assistant Principal
DESCRIPTION: The High School Guidance Counselor is responsible for creating the master
schedule, scheduling students, academic advising, supporting student
transitions to and from the high school, and promoting the social,
emotional, moral, and mental growth of high school students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Duties include but not limited to the following:
· Develop an exemplary academic guidance program for the high school
· Adhere to monthly data and academic calendar set by the MDE office of Student Strategic Services and Office of Secondary Education, counseling department
· Maintain the integrity and accuracy of Aberdeen’s Sam Spectra academic data system
· Communicate regularly with parents and students using the district provided tools/apps
· Hold orientation meetings with teachers, parents, and students to explain services
· Keep timely and accurate academic records for students and parents, including Active Student accounts
· Review and ensure that students are scheduled for courses to meet current MDE graduation requirements
· Provide both group and individual counseling sessions for all students as appropriate, meeting with each cohort at least one time per semester
· Facilitate resolution of academic and/or personal problems encountered by students
· Assist students in ACT and other entrance exams for college admissions, provide vouchers to students
· Assist students in making vocational choices and in seeking employment opportunities
· Make students aware of financial aid available and assist students in completing FAFSA, applications for college scholarships, and college entrance
· Participate in conferences with parents based on needs of students
· Conduct orientation for students making transitions from one level to the next, e.g. from junior high to high school or high school to college
· Coordinate with teachers to post term grades and verify the accuracy of grades for term
· Collaborate with administrators to plan graduation and academic awards programs
· Keep cumulative folders current and secure
· Create the framework and the individual schedules for teachers and students in SAMs
· Perform other duties as assigned by administration
