JOB TITLE: Assistant Coach - Special Olympics for Basketball, Track and Field
EMPLOYMENT TERM: Season in accordance with South Dakota Special Olympics guidelines
REPORTS TO: Director of Athletics/Director of Special Education
REQUIREMENTS
A. Education Level: Bachelor’s degree plus theory of coaching or coaching principles and prevention and care of athletic injuries or coaching first aid or a qualified first aid course. Certification in Physical Education or Special Education required.
B. Experience Desired: Previous participation and/or appropriate coaching experience. Experience working with special education students preferred.
C. Other Requirements: Demonstrate a genuine and up-to-date knowledge of the sport including fundamentals, rules and strategy. Maintain coaching philosophy consistent with the Aberdeen School District. Demonstrated loyalty to the athletic department, program, and head coach. Demonstrated skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Ability to communicate effectively and relate well with students, school personnel and parents. Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
D. Physical Requirements: Possess sufficient strength, agility, dexterity and mobility to carry out all performance responsibilities. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Essential Functions and Duties:
• Assist the head coach in program execution and development.
• Fulfill all duties and assignments enthusiastically.
• Manage and direct the team under head coach supervision.
• Work to improve coaching expertise through professional development.
• Attend practices three times weekly for eight weeks.
• Supervise and maintain locker room and practice areas to insure the health and safety of the athletes.
• Chaperone, supervise and remain with the athletes when traveling to competitive events.
• Assist students with functional daily living skills such as dressing, feeding and bathing.
• Maintain proper rapport with athletes, parents, and fans.
• Operate within the constitution and by-laws of the South Dakota State Special Olympics Association.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Director of Special Education.
