Position Overview:
Abernathy Independent School District (AISD) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Patient Care Technician (PCT) Teacher / Secondary School Nurse to join our team. This full-time position involves providing healthcare services to secondary school students while also teaching the Practicum of Health Science course in our Career & Technical Education (CTE) program. The ideal candidate will bring real-world medical expertise into the classroom, prepare students for careers in healthcare, and contribute to the overall well-being of our students and school community.
Key Responsibilities:
School Nursing Responsibilities:
- Provide direct healthcare services to students and staff, including first aid, medication administration, and emergency care.
- Maintain accurate health records, including immunizations, screenings, and medical documentation in compliance with district policies and state regulations.
- Collaborate with parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals to support student health needs.
- Monitor and manage chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and severe allergies.
- Develop and implement health education initiatives for students and staff.
- Assist with district-wide health screenings and wellness programs.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
CTE Health Science Instruction:
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons for the Practicum of Health Science course that align with TEA (Texas Education Agency) standards.
- Teach students clinical skills, patient care techniques, and healthcare fundamentals in preparation for certification exams such as Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) or other industry-recognized credentials.
- Supervise students in hands-on learning experiences, including simulations, labs, and potential clinical rotations.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals and local medical facilities to provide real-world learning opportunities.
- Maintain high standards for classroom management, student engagement, and professional skill development.
General Responsibilities:
- Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages student growth.
- Communicate effectively with parents, students, and colleagues regarding student progress and health concerns.
- Actively participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events.
- Ensure all instructional and nursing duties comply with district policies and Texas state regulations.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) certification in Texas.
- Texas Teacher Certification in Health Science (or willingness to obtain certification).
- CPR & First Aid Certification (required).
- Additional healthcare certifications (e.g., CNA, PCT, EMT, or similar) are a plus.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Strong background in healthcare, patient care, and medical instruction.
- Knowledge of Texas school health policies and procedures.
- Ability to teach and mentor students in a clinical and classroom setting.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency in medical terminology, electronic health records, and basic healthcare procedures.
Experience:
- Prior experience as a school nurse, clinical nurse, or healthcare instructor is preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents in an educational or healthcare setting.
- Experience in patient care training or CTE health science instruction is a plus.
