Director, Development, High Museum of Art

The Deputy Director will embrace the Museum’s priorities of Growth, Inclusivity, Collaboration, and Connectivity as they guide and mentor their team, collaborate with other members of the senior team, and develop funding partnerships to support the Museum’s commitment to ensuring access to the arts. The Deputy Director, Development will create fundraising and partnership approaches that help maintain the High Museum’s position as a regional, national, and global leader in the arts.

The Deputy Director, Development will demonstrate their expertise in several areas including :

  • Developing Annual Goals : Working closely with the other members of the leadership team, the Deputy Director, Development will be instrumental in establishing annual budgets and setting departmental goals. The Deputy Director will excel at leading the members of the Development team and will provide regular funding updates to the Director, Executive Committee, and Development Committee. The current fundraising goal across all channels is $14,000,000.
  • Prospecting and Closing Gifts : The successful Deputy Director will be skilled in researching and engaging donors with a special focus on major gifts of $25,000 and above. The Deputy Director will partner with the Museum Director and trustees to cultivate prospects and solidify gifts.
  • Engaging and Maintaining Existing Donors : The Deputy Director, Development will lead the Development team in actively engaging existing donors, focusing on both retaining partnerships and expanding engagement.
  • Supervising Relationships with Public and Private Funders : The Deputy Director will bring their experience supervising funding relationships with foundation and corporate support.
  • Lead Special Initiatives : Together with other members of the leadership team, the Deputy Director, Development will lead focused fundraising initiatives related to exhibitions, growing the High’s endowment, and capital and legacy programs.
  • Directing Major Campaigns : In partnership with Museum leadership, the Deputy Director will implement strategies to achieve major fundraising goals.

The Deputy Director, Development reports to the High Museum’s Director and is a member of the senior leadership team. The Deputy Director, Development will lead the Museum’s Development team of twenty staff members, including the following direct reports : the Associate Director, Individual Giving; the Associate Director, Foundation & Government Relations; the Associate Director, Membership; the Associate Director, Events; and the Manager, Corporate Giving.

Ideally, the Deputy Director will have an appreciation for the arts and the diverse audiences the High Museum engages. The Deputy Director, Development will join a seasoned team of professionals and will be experienced in collaborative strategic planning. The successful Deputy Director, Development will have demonstrated experience leading and mentoring a team of fundraisers. Ideally, the successful candidate will have examples of :

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly build rapport, as well as build and maintain effective long-term relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written; the ability to prepare and give successful presentations.
  • Demonstrated success in hiring, developing, and mentoring a team.
  • High attention to detail and project management.
  • The highest levels of ethics and discretion.
  • Personal initiative and persistence in meeting goals and building relationships.
  • Proficiency in CRM software, preferably in a fundraising environment.
  • Creating a departmental budget and setting fundraising goals.
  • Board development.
  • Success writing grants, developing memberships, and solidifying major gifts.
  • Preferred qualifications include :

  • Bachelor's degree with CFRE certification.
  • At least seven years of relevant experience including at least five years in a supervisory role.
  • Related experience in the non-profit sector, including serving on a non-profit board’s committee.
  • The leadership team of the High Museum works a modified hybrid schedule allowing all eligible employees the opportunity to work remotely one day per week.

    The anticipated salary range is $165,000 - $175,000.
