Job Description: As an Independent Living Specialist, you will play a critical role in empowering individuals with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in their communities. This position involves providing a wide range of services and support to consumers, promoting self-determination, and advocating for equal opportunities.
Responsibilities:
- Consumer Support: Provide one-on-one support and guidance to individuals with disabilities in developing and achieving their independent living goals. Assist consumers in identifying their strengths, needs, and barriers to independent living and collaborate on developing strategies for overcoming challenges.
- Skills Training: Conduct individual and group training on various independent living skills, including but not limited to personal care, household management, budgeting, transportation, and assistive technology usage. Help clients acquire the necessary skills to enhance their independence and self-sufficiency.
- Information and Referral: Act as a resource for consumers by providing accurate and up-to-date information on community resources, support services, and programs available to individuals with disabilities. Assist consumers in accessing appropriate resources based on their needs and goals.
- Advocacy: Advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities by promoting inclusive policies and practices within the community. Collaborate with community organizations, service providers, and government agencies to improve accessibility and ensure equal opportunities for all.
- Individualized Planning: Assist consumers in developing personalized independent living plans based on their unique goals and aspirations. Conduct regular assessments to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to the plan in collaboration with the consumer.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of I&R, consumer, and community interactions, services provided, and progress towards independent living goals. Prepare reports as required by funding sources and participate in program evaluation activities.
- Outreach and Education: Conduct outreach activities to raise awareness about Ability Montana's services and advocate for disability rights. Deliver presentations and workshops to community groups, schools, and other relevant stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, disability studies, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Knowledge of disability rights, independent living philosophy, and current issues impacting individuals with disabilities.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities and a strong understanding of their unique needs and challenges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with clients from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team.
- Proficient in using technology and assistive devices to support independent living.
- Valid driver's license and proof of current auto liability insurance.
· Prospective employees must pass a criminal and Department of Justice background check.
Working Conditions:
- This position may require occasional travel within the designated service area.
