Position Title: Employment Skills Instructor
Reports To: CES Program Manager & Employment Skills Coordinator
I. Position Summary
The Employment Skills Instructor is responsible for providing training, support, and evaluation to individuals with developmental disabilities in both curriculum and on the job training in an integrated community setting. They play a crucial role in researching and implementing curriculum, ensuring consumer safety, following agency policies and procedures, and working with consumers to achieve their individual program goals in a person-centered environment. Some weekend, evening and holiday work may be required for most assignments.
II. Qualifications
High school diploma or G.E.D. is required. Must have the ability to instruct the disabled. Two years’ work experience in lawn care, janitorial or industrial production work preferred. Previous landscape experience, including watering techniques, knowledge of sprinkler systems, and use of two- & four- cycle landscape equipment, will be helpful for off-site duties. Must be familiar with computer applications.
Must demonstrate a commitment to the program goals and consumer outcomes as outlined in the program design. Must demonstrate a commitment to the concept of community integration, critical skill development, normalization, and consumer directed planning. Ability to plan, organize, and implement consumer program plans and incorporate them into an efficient training process.
Must possess the ability to communicate well and work as a team player. Must be 21 years of age. A valid California Driver's license, good D.M.V. printout, reliable transportation, and auto insurance required. All applicants will be required to pass a criminal, educational, and employment background check. In addition, they must successfully complete a drug screen, physical, and tuberculosis test.
While the typical qualifying entrance background may include all the above, desirable qualifications including any combination of training, education and experience that demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position may be substituted.
III. Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
1. Key Position Responsibilities
· Will work on community-based assignments that may include any or all of lawn care, grounds maintenance, lot cleanup, janitorial services, and various other types of jobs.
· The Employment Skills Instructor will be responsible for the research, design, development, implementation, and recording outcomes of person- centered curriculum modules for consumers regarding employment services and support.
· Will operate, and train others to operate, hand and power tools and equipment used in these services.
· Will have the primary role of training adults with disabilities in providing these services and monitoring their activities to ensure safety and quality of workmanship.
· Will assist counselors in assessing and monitoring consumer’s progress, attendance, work attitudes and habits. Will work with counselors and supervisors to address problems with any of these issues.
· Will modify work methods as necessary to accommodate individual disabilities of consumers.
· Will keep accurate records as required.
· Will assist in maintaining equipment and supply inventories.
· Required to transport consumers or materials, or to travel between job sites using agency vehicle or personal vehicle.
2. Curriculum and Training:
· The Employment Skills Instructor will train adults with disabilities in various vocational activities and assess their progress.
· Will conduct classes in group sessions providing services and support in a classroom or outside setting.
· Will monitor consumers' activities and modify methods to accommodate individual needs.
· They will record consumer outcomes and keep accurate records.
· Participate in meetings and training as appropriate to the position.
· Will attend First Aid and CPR training.
3. Consumer Safety:
· Adheres to all agency safety procedures and policies.
· Maintains vigilance in monitoring consumers’ activities and environment to ensure their safety.
· Promptly report any safety-related incidents in accordance with agency policy.
· Ensures that equipment is always operated in a safe manner.
· Ensure the safety and well-being of consumers at all times in both the classroom and on-the-job training.

· May assist in regular maintenance and /or minor repair of equipment and tools.
· Other assignments as necessary and not limited to the Essential and Marginal duties listed above.

7. Language Skills
· Must be able to read and interpret documents such as correspondence, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to communicate effectively to customers, consumers, and employees of ABLE Industries. Must be able to keep accurate and legible records. The ability to speak a second language such as Spanish, Hmong, Filipino, etc. could be helpful.
8. Mathematical Skills
· Should have the ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's, and the ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight, volume, and distance.
· Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply them to practical situations.
9. Reasoning Ability
· Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
