Vocational Specialist
Job Description:
A Vocational Specialist (VS) provides the necessary supports and services to assist individuals receiving services from ABRA to work for compensation in a variety of community-integrated work environments in which persons without disabilities are also employed. The VS is directly responsible to the Supported Employment Director. The position may be full-time or sub status and may require working a variety of shifts.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Be at least eighteen years old, have proof of a high school diploma or G.E.D., and demonstrate an eighth-grade level of literacy on the TABE exam.
- Be able to speak and understand the English language.
- Have a valid driver’s license and car insurance
- Must have a fingerprint criminal background check from the Illinois State Police completed with the results reported to the Health Care Worker Registry. The results must determine that the applicant has no disqualifying convictions (without a waiver from the Illinois Department of Public Health) or an administrative finding of abuse, neglect or theft. The applicant must also have a DCFS CANTS clearance, and an Illinois Sex Offender Registry clearance.
- Be in good physical and mental health with no permanent limitations for lifting.
- For new hires- Upon the acceptance of the offer of employment, the employee must complete within the initial employment period a physical exam with the physician of your choice and TB testing. Prior physicals exams and TB tests conducted within a year of the hire date will be considered valid.
Vocational Specialists will attend regularly scheduled vocational meetings and applicable in-service trainings and complete any competencies that go along with the training in order to meet the DHS annual training requirements. They will also maintain CPR and first aid certification, and any other training required by the agency or DHS.
Supports and Services provided by the VS shall include but are not limited to:
- Follow posted work schedule as assigned according to the job schedule, this could include some weekends and holidays. Holidays observed will be according to the individual’s served schedule
- Follow all policies and procedures of ABRA
- Record the hours the individual worked at his or her job in the SEP book that is designated for each individual
- Document progress in the Vocational section of the individual’s UNB
- Function as part of the Community Support Team to identify the individual’s needs and make recommendations for their ISP
- Be responsible for general supervision of the individual served
- Counseling in work role expectations, workplace behavior, and problem solving
- Facilitation of natural supports on the work site
- On the job training in work related skills required to perform the job
- Be able to provide transportation to and from the job site
- In the event of an individual’s absence, the VS may need to work on the behalf of the individual
Full time and part time employees are required to attend regularly scheduled in service trainings and house meetings and complete any competencies that go along with the training in order to meet the DHS annual training requirements. This includes CPR and first aid certification, and any other training as specified by the agency or DHS
Sub status employees are encouraged to attend regularly scheduled in-service trainings and house meetings and complete any competencies that go along with the training. If a substitute is unable to attend these trainings or house meetings, a substitute may read the notes and complete any competencies that go along with the training in order to meet the DHS annual training requirements. Substitutes must also maintain CPR and first aid certification, and any other training as specified by the agency or DHS.
