What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Scientific Research, position at ABRF Group?
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking a Director for our Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource. The shared resource comprises 10 full-time employees (FTEs) and 20 instruments, including 8 sorters and 12 analyzers, exclusively serving St. Jude investigators. Our shared resources are integral to our mission of curing catastrophic childhood diseases. We value them highly, supporting them with hard funds. Our primary goal is advancing science rather than cost recovery, and our current institutional expectation is a 25% recovery rate, excluding capital equipment depreciation. The new director will also have funds allocated for FY26 to purchase 3 new sorters.
Our world-class facility boasts 10 full-time staff positions supported by hard money, 8 cell sorters, and 12 flow analyzers, featuring top instruments such as BD Biosciences Aria, Fusion, LSR Fortessa, Symphony A3, A5, A5-SE, Cytek Aurora, and ThermoFisher BigFoot.
The Flow Shared Resource offers a wide array of services, including standard and highly complex flow analysis, conventional and spectral cell sorting, diverse sample preparation methods, complex data analysis and interpretation, and training for staff in analyzer and sorter operations, as well as self-service analysis capabilities.
In this role, you will lead a team of flow cytometry specialists supporting research across 100 laboratories at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. You will establish clear roles for staff that foster engagement and enable career growth. Staying up-to-date on the latest flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies and applications will be crucial to maintaining our facility's cutting-edge status. Effective communication with investigators, staff, and project stakeholders will be essential, as you implement systems for quality assessment, consistency, and innovation.
Additionally, you will collaborate with faculty and research staff on project management, design, technical requirements, and execution within the Flow Shared Resource. Oversight of operational quality, service delivery, budgeting, and strategic recommendations for equipment upgrades and expansion will also be part of your responsibilities.
At St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we know what can be achieved when the brightest scientific minds face the fewest barriers. That’s why we provide world-class facilities, state-of-the-art technologies, and extraordinary support for your research to ensure scientific progress is never halted from a lack of resources. At St. Jude, you will be part of a collaborative, bench-to-bedside environment where you can see, firsthand, how your science translates into survival for the children we serve.
