Job Summary
Monona Plumbing & Fire Protection is seeking a dedicated Controller to oversee all financial activities. You will handle budgeting, forecasting, forecasting reporting, financial reporting, risk management, and cost analysis while also managing and developing a high-performing team. Your expertise will be instrumental in guiding the company’s financial health and supporting strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Financial Management
- Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accurate and reliable financial reporting.
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
- Monitor key financial metrics and variances, and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Develop and manage the company's budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Collaborate with senior management to establish financial goals and objectives.
- Work closely with insurance companies and agents to handle quotes, renewals, claims, and audits as necessary.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee the day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting principles and standards.
- Review and approve financial transactions, invoices, and purchase orders.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of financial transactions.
- Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and regulatory compliance.
Cost Analysis & Control
- Monitor project costs, budgets, and profitability, providing analysis and recommendations for cost-saving measures.
- Collaborate with project managers to review project financials, including job cost reports and labor analysis.
- Perform variance analysis to identify deviations from project budgets and implement corrective actions.
- Assist in the development and evaluation of pricing strategies for bids and proposals.
Financial Planning & Strategy
- Provide financial insights and analysis to support strategic decision-making.
- Conduct financial modeling and scenario analysis for business planning and forecasting.
- Assist in evaluating investment opportunities and potential acquisitions.
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices in financial management.
People Management
- Supervise and mentor the accounting team and other staff as needed, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
- Set performance goals and conduct regular performance evaluations for team members.
- Foster a positive work environment, promoting collaboration, teamwork, and effective communication.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels and optimize resource allocation within the department.
- Resolve any employee issues, conflicts, or performance concerns in a timely and effective manner.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master's degree or CPA certification is a plus).
- Proven experience as a Controller or similar role in the construction or mechanical contracting industry.
- In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and budgeting.
- Proficiency in financial management software (Sage 300 CRE preferred) and advanced knowledge of MS Excel.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.

- Experience in managing and leading a team.
- Ability to work collaboratively and provide financial guidance to cross-functional teams.
