Abundance Food Co-op in Rochester, NY is seeking a Team Member to work in our Front-End and Customer Service departments. Team Members at Abundance should have welcoming, friendly, and helpful demeanor in addition to a passion for delighting customers with excellent customer service, a fun shopping experience, and quality products.

**PLEASE NOTE** Abundance Food Co-op is only able to hire individuals 18 years of age or older at this time. Individuals under 18 years of age will not be considered.

Anticipated weekly hours: Variable 20-38, depending on candidate's preference and availability. Shifts will vary in length.

This particular role has a starting hourly pay rate of $16.00 - $16.50 / hour with benefits (Health/Vision/ Dental insurance, employee assistance program, employee discount, paid time off, weekly pay, free coffee & tea, free parking, and more!).

Actual starting pay rate will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, KSAs (knowledge, skills, abilities), market data, etc.

*Please note* Weekend morning shifts and weekday evening shifts are a current requirement for this position. Our hours of operation are 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, seven (7) days a week. The individual selected for this position will need to have flexible availability on weekday evenings and weekend mornings in addition to being able to consistently work weekly scheduled shifts. Employees are scheduled until 9:30pm for a closing shift or 7:30am for an opening shift. Please do not apply if you are unable to commit to this.

Time off requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Desired experience:

  • 6 months - 1 year of experience in a retail grocery and/or merchandising setting highly preferred
  • 6 months - 1 year of experience in customer service focused roles
  • 6 months - 1 year of experience operating a cash register and providing correct change highly desired
  • Experience unloading trucks/pallets/stocking shelves, placing items accurately on shelves according to specified label
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50lbs on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work in environments with varying temperatures (freezer/cooler) areas as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

Customer Service

  • Provide customer service that is above the customer’s expectation.
  • Always greet customers when they come in and thank them when they leave.
  • Friendly and conversant with customers.
  • Provide appropriate answers or get help to customer questions
  • Call for backup when you see lines begin to form.
  • Offer to bag their groceries and always help bagging.
  • Understand Co-op policies and answer questions about the Co-op.
  • Inform non-members of the benefits of membership.

Cashiering

  • Know register operation and meet standards for speed and accuracy.
  • Check out all purchases quickly and accurately.
  • PLU codes are entered correctly and prices are accurate.
  • Provide information to the Scanning Coordinator when discrepancies occur.
  • Assist other cashiers when they need help.
  • Handle cash and other instruments in an accurate, appropriate manner.
  • Keep tills, drawers and area around register neat and clean.
  • Recognize produce and bulk items.

Other Duties

  • Answer Phones and make certain that call is transferred to the appropriate party.
  • Complete all items on the opening and closing and midday checklists.

When not needed for cashiering:

  • Check the café and clean tables, refill coffee or clean as necessary, including sweeping of front end and bulk areas.
  • Restock front and back bathrooms as necessary.
  • Stock items in the front end as needed.
  • Assist the Floor Supervisors with tasks as needed.
  • Check in vendors or inform management of vendor arrival.
  • When one cashier is scheduled, cashier will restock product within earshot of the front end. Register should be secured when leaving station.
  • When two or more cashiers are scheduled, second cashier will float into other departments as needed, check with Front End Supervisor for department assignment.
  • Round up and organize carts and baskets throughout store.
  • Help Customers with questions/concerns/inquiries.

  • Able to use computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, telephone, and various office equipment occasionally.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, climb stairs or ladder.
  • Able to reach above shoulder height occasionally.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time.
