JOB POSTING: School Security Officer at Academie da Vinci Charter School, K-8
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
- You must have completed the State of Florida School Guardian training program and hold a valid State of Florida School Guardian Certification.
- OR
- If you do not currently have the State of Florida School Guardian certification, you will be asked to enroll in a 4-week training program offered by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department during the summer. Academie da Vinci will provide additional information if you choose to pursue this option.
Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced School Security Officer (SSO) to join our school team. The School Security Officer will play a critical role in promoting a safe and secure learning environment for students, faculty, and staff. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in law enforcement, excellent communication skills, and a passion for working with youth.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a visible presence on campus to deter potential safety threats and provide a sense of security for students, staff, and visitors.
- Build positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff to foster trust and open communication.
- Conduct regular patrols of school grounds and facilities to monitor for unauthorized individuals, suspicious activity, or safety hazards.
- Respond promptly to incidents, emergencies, and safety concerns, including fights, disturbances, medical emergencies, and security breaches.
- Investigate allegations of criminal activity, including theft, vandalism, drug possession, and assault, and take appropriate action in accordance with school policies and legal requirements.
- Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, and support staff to address student behavioral issues, provide crisis intervention, and promote conflict resolution strategies.
- Provide educational presentations and workshops on topics such as bullying prevention, substance abuse awareness, internet safety, and emergency preparedness.
- Liaise with local law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and community organizations to coordinate resources and support for school safety initiatives.
- Assist with the development and implementation of safety protocols, emergency response plans, and threat assessment procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents, investigations, and interactions with students, parents, and other stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field preferred.
- Completion of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Guardian 4 week training program and possession of a valid state law enforcement certification.
- Minimum of two years of experience in law enforcement, with prior experience working in a school or youth-focused setting preferred.
- Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies related to school safety and security.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations, including students, parents, educators, and community members.
- Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, make sound judgments in crisis situations, and prioritize competing demands.
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting positive youth development, fostering positive relationships, and building trust within the school community.
- Flexibility to work non-traditional hours and respond to emergencies outside of regular school hours, as needed.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
