Substitutes work on a part-time, on-call basis and may be called to fill-in the morning of the school day. Teachers or administrators will typically contact the substitute directly for an assignment, which the substitute may accept or decline.
Substitute Teachers track attendance, administer quizzes and tests, explain assignments, collect homework and provide general supervision during class periods. Substitute Teachers work with students individually or as a group to keep up with the regulalr curriculum. They read lesson plans and teach them to the students, providing guided instruction on their subject.

In order to substitute at Académie Lafayette, you must have a current Missouri substitute teaching certificate through Missouri DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education). If you do not already have a substitute certification, please take a moment to review the requirements and steps for certification: https://dese.mo.gov/educator-quality/certification/substitute-teachers
- Those with foreign transcripts/credentials (and no US college credits), you will need to have a credential evaluation performed to show you have a minimum of 36 hours of college credit, you can find out more information on the DESE website here: Recognized credentialing agencies for out-of country credentials. You may also chose to go through a 20-hour training approved by DESE to be eligible for certification; this is normally for those who don't have at least 36 hrs of college credit, but it could be more efficient for those with foreign degrees to go this route instead of having an evaluation performed.
- All substitutes are required to be registered with the Family Care Safety Registry in addition to a MACHS federal and state background check. Académie Lafayette will require access to the MACHS background check, you will use code 1005 when registering to have the results sent to DESE and our district. (If you do not use code 1005 when getting your initial certification, you will need to get another background check.)
