POSITION OVERVIEW:

The contract adjunct teachers teach during the evening (6:00 9:30 pm) at our Ward 8 site (421 Alabama Avenue, SE) or at our Ward 5 site (2315 18th Place, NE). Language Arts teachers teach Monday and Wednesday.

All teachers are responsible for creating a supportive, empowering learning environment for adult learners and delivering quality content area instruction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Instruction and Support

  • Teach adult basic education, secondary, and post-secondary level classes to adults as required for a successful transition into post-secondary education or the workforce. STEM teachers may teach science, technology and math classes. Language Arts teachers may teach writing and reading/social studies classes.
  • Develop lesson plans that ensure the attainment of state learning standards and the additional specific learning standards set forth in the curriculum map adopted in the Charter agreement;
  • Provide direct and indirect instruction;
  • Engage in long and short-term planning addressing individual needs of students;
  • Prepare students adequately for all required assessments;
  • Prepare at least twice per term individual student progress reports for students
  • Provide ongoing assessment of individual student progress and adjust lesson plans to meet the needs of the students;
  • Coordinate lesson plans with other teachers to maximize possibilities for teaching similar topics in the same general time frame, thus reinforcing student knowledge on an interdisciplinary basis;
  • Oversee volunteer instructional staff serving as co-teachers in their classes and to those providing one-on-one or small group tutoring to their students;
  • Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management;
  • Coordinate with Student Support Services in ensuring adult learners get both the academic and social services they need to be successful in school and in their transition to college or career. Participate in regular meetings with the Student Support Team for this purpose.
  • Perform other duties, as deemed appropriate, by the Instructional Manager or Associate Campus Principal.

Program Administration and Data Collection

  • Provide accurate and timely collection and entry of student attendance, class progress and disciplinary actions, if needed.
  • Coordinate with Accountability Team in collecting and recording student progress and achievement data, as well as other data that may be required.

Professional Development

  • Commit to ongoing professional development in techniques for teaching adults, in the GED, NEDP and Accuplacer, as appropriate, and in particular subject content area.
  • Participate in professional development, learning circles and/or peer coaching sessions.
  • Accept and incorporate feedback and coaching from administrative staff and Lead Teachers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree and secondary or adult education experience required

Experience:

  • Experience with Common Core and/or College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults.
  • Familiarity with CASAS.

Computer/Technology Skills:

  • Must have solid technical skills - Previous experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite required
  • Experience with various online platforms

Other Necessary Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong cultural competency skills required, including excellent ability to communicate with a diverse population.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong computer skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various departments.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to file materials.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25lbs
  • Must be able to withstand extended viewing of computer screens
  • This position will sit in an open/shared office environment with moderate noise levels.
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position is currently working a hybrid model, telework and on-site. Schedule will be determined by the Senior Leadership Team
