Description

The Senior Projectionist is responsible for all assigned technical and projection aspects of the four state-of-the-art theaters operated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (Academy Museum) in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles : the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, the Linwood Dunn Theater, the David Geffen Theater, and the Ted Mann Theater. You will provide Academy members, museum guests, and clients with the highest possible technical accuracy across all projected film formats and event types.

This position is represented by a union.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Perform inspections and assessments with proper handling and care of Archive film prints.
  • Perform16mm, 35mm, 35mm nitrate, and 70mm changeover projection.
  • Identify various video and audio file types used in the post-production process, their reproduction codecs, image resolution, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, and audio track mapping & patching.
  • Practice proper safety protocols related to the handling of safety and nitrate film stock, as well as xenon and laser light sources.
  • Meet all operational and technical challenges needed for a successful show.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of museum management, in-house projection staff, guest engineers, and Academy technical committees.
  • Work well independently and as part of a team when performing projection duties.
  • Uphold the Academy standard for exhibition and program excellence.

Qualifications and Requirements :

  • IATSE 695 membership or a willingness to join.
  • 5 years' experience in operating and mechanically maintaining motion picture projection and sound apparatus of all film gauges and film types to ensure ongoing optimum performance.
  • Ability to troubleshoot systems and communicate any issues to Projection Engineering staff.
  • Hands-on experience with digital cinema projectors, and the various image and sound reproduction sources associated with them.
  • Experience working in fast-paced clip shows and events.
  • Thorough knowledge of film gauges, stock types, picture aspect ratios, and sound reproduction techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of digital projection and operation of related servers including but not limited to Dolby Vision, Dolby IMS, and Barco Alchemy.
  • Experience using the appropriate computer-based hardware and software is required. Knowledge of Qlab and Playback Pro is a plus.
  • Familiarity with all types of digital formats including but not limited to QuickTime, H.264, BluRay, etc.
  • Understand procedures relating to all shows and events reproduced via digital cinema packages and KDM's in how they are obtained, organized, ingested, and projected.
  • Understanding of signal flow between various types of equipment for both digital and analog.
  • Film post-production knowledge desired.
  • A positive attitude and ability to adapt and be flexible to new technologies and procedures.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends.

  • Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to move and transport up to 50 lbs.

    The expected salary for this role is $60.10 per hour. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
