What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Lab Technician position at Acadian Medical Center?
1. Responsible for maintaining and using various equipment in the Clinical Laboratory.
2. Performs quality control procedures and maintains records on these checks.
3. Responsible for documenting workload and other statistics.
4. Responsible for documenting correct information for billing purposes.
5. Receives and logs patient specimens.
6. Responsible for centrifuging specimens to separate cells from sediment, serum or supernatant fluids.
7. Responsible for performing special chemistry tests as needed.
8. Responsible for adding specific reagents to specimens and preparing them for examination per policy / procedure.
9. Responsible for identifying chemical composition and concentrations and to observe the process of change.
10. Follows standard precautions at all times.
11. Calculates results and documents observations.
12. Notifies patient care unit and / or physician of all critical test values.
13. Records all test results in logbooks, quality control records and in the computer system.
14. Always verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient and for the indicated test procedure.
15. Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products and instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
16. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical / health care errors.
17. Departmental Communications : Maintains short term communication in assigned sections (board, logs, etc.). Maintains short term communication with fellow employees (pending workload, stat, timed tests, etc.). Maintains communication with supervisors, including Lab Director and Medical Technologists.
18. Keeps in mind that adult tests have adult normal ranges and children's normal ranges may vary. New born bilirubin values, for instance, have a normal range of 3-7 mg / dl for age 1 day to 3 days old. If the patient is an adult, and has a bilirubin of 10, this is considered a panic value and must be handled as a life threatening emergency following our Laboratory's Panic Value Protocol.
19. Knowledgeable other tests such as Alkaline Phosphatase, AST, and LDH have similar variance in ranges between adult and children's normal ranges.
20. Performs all tests for which he / she is trained in assigned areas adhering to all standards set forth by CLIA, OSHA, The Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies.
21. Shifts work emphasis to response to unforeseen work load / staffing changes inter / intra section or shift.
